The Era of Great Depression

Modern Times by Charlie Chaplin is set in the 1930s during the great depression era. The film's main concerns echo those of millions of people at the time where unemployment, poverty, and hunger were an enormous factor. The film was a comment about the impact of industrialization on people during 1930s. it is a quasi silent film which reflects the social protest against unemployment, poverty, and hunger.

Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in London, England, on April 16th 1889. His father was a versatile vocalist and actor; and his mother, known under the stage name of Lily Harley, was an attractive actress and singer, who gained a reputation for her work in the light opera field. His father died when he was ten and her mother was also sick which made him and his brother Sydney work hard since their childhood. He started working in his early age being a stage perfomer or a tap dancer with his natural talents. When he was about fourteen, he got his first chance to act in a legitimate stage show, and appeared as “Billy” the page boy, in support of William Gillette in “Sherlock Holmes”. At the close of this engagement, Charlie started a career as a comedian in vaudeville, which eventually took him to the United States in 1910 as a featured player with the Fred Karno Repertoire Company. As he gained his popularity in the United States, he started working for the motion picture companies being a comedian. Not only comedian, he was also a good composer, director, producer, and a good writer.

In his movie Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin is a factory worker who screws nuts at an ever-increasing rate onto pieces of machinery. The stress and the fast moving machine makes him mentally distressed. This picture gives a clear message of industralizing world and the victim of economic dipression. The huge machine and the rate of work suggest a worker at that time being slave of the machine. One day he has a nervous breakdown from the stress of his job and creates chaos in the plant before being sent to prison. Released for good behavior, he goes not looking for trouble but is once more arrested for picking up the red construction flag and ending up as the apparent leader of the worker’s union. After having an enjoyable prison stay, he is released but finds life on the outside difficult. He tries to get thrown back in prison by taking the blame for an orphaned young woman who was caught stealing some bread. He befriends her, and they start living together in a run-down shack. The tramp goes back to work at a factory as a mechanic's assistant. But the factory closes down because of a strike, and he is again incorrectly held for attacking a policeman in a riot. When he gets out of jail, the young girl has found a job in a café. He also starts working as a singer and have a pessimistic life after. The final scene has the Tramp optimistically arm and arm with his love Paulette Goddard walking into the sunset, a fitting end to the grand era of the silent film.

Modern Times is the classic battle of man and the toil and dehumanization of factory life. The best example is the automatic feeding machine, which is a mechanical, automated, aerodynamically-styled, silent feeding machine which features a revolving table, an automaton soup plate, an automatic food pusher, a revolving low and high gear corncob feeder, and a hydro-compressed sterilized mouth wipe. It is described in the movie as, “a practical device which automatically feeds your men while at work. Don't stop for lunch. Be ahead of your competitor...the feeding machine will eliminate the lunch hour, increase your production, and decrease your overhead” (The Modern Times)”.

The music composition and the sounds used in the movie are also supporting the social satire of the industrialization and the great depression era. The sound of the fast moving machine and the command of the chairman of the factory clearly pictures the industrialization era. Although the background of the movie is sad and depressed, the song by Charlie Chaplin makes audience feel happy in the movie. The communist movement, strike, and the revolution are also shown in the movie. When Charlie Chaplin waves the flag, he got arrested being charged of a communist leader. In his real life also he was charged being a supporter of McCarthyism.

Modern Times is often hailed as one of Chaplin's greatest achievements, and it remains one of his more popular films. The iconic depiction of Chaplin working frantically to keep up with an assembly line inspired later comedy routines including Disney's Der Fuehrer's Face, an episode of I Love Lucy titled "Job Switching", and most recently, an episode of Drake & Josh. This was Chaplin's first overtly political-themed film, and its unflattering portrayal of industrial society generated controversy in some quarters upon its initial release.

बदलिँदो समय र करिअर काउन्सिलिङ

बिहानको साढे तीन बजिरहेको थियो । मोबाइल फोनको घण्टीले म उठ्न बाध्य भएँ । निदाएको केही समयमात्र भएको थियो । बिहान सबेरै उठ्नुपर्ने भएपछि निन्द्राले पनि निहुँ खोज्ने कुरामा धेरैको विमती नहुन सक्छ । अर्धनिन्द्रामै संवाद गर्ने मेरो बानी नौलो भने होइन । फोन भने नेपालबाट भर्खरै अमेरिकाका लागि पढ्ने भिसा पाएर अमेरिका आउने तयारी गरिरहनुभएका एकजना साथीले गर्नु भएको रहेछ । ई–मेलमार्फत हाम्रो परिचय भएको थियो । प्रसंग भने हामी विद्यार्थीहरूकै भविष्यसँग सम्बन्धित करियर काउन्सिलिङको थियो ।

भविष्यको सुन्दर सपना बुन्दै गरेका ती साथीले मलाई अमेरिका आएर अब म के पढ्ने भन्ने प्रश्न गर्दै थिए । म एकछिन अकमक्कै परें । सायद उनी मबाट केही सुझावको अपेक्षा गर्दै थिए । उनीसँग संवाद गरेपछि भने मेरो निन्द्रा पर्न गाह्रो भयो । मेरो मानसपटलमा केवल एउटै कुरा घुमिरह्यो । वास्तवमै हामी नेपाली युवाहरूको यो एक जटिल समस्या हो कि भविष्यमा के पढेर के बन्ने भन्नेबारे धेरै युवाहरू अनभिज्ञ छन् ।

विकसित मुलुकहरूका दुतावासहरूबाट मलिन अनुहार लिएर फर्किएका र भिसा प्राप्त गरेर उड्ने तयारी गरिरहेका अनि स्वदेशमै पढेर केही बन्ने चाहना गरेका विद्यार्थीहरू सबैका लागि उत्तिकै महत्वपूर्ण छ, करिअर काउन्सिलिङ । विशेषतः एसएलसी पछिको पाठ्यक्रममा समावेश भए विद्यार्थीको भविष्य निर्माणमा सहयोग हुने कुरामा कसैको पनि दुई मत नहोला । सरकारको शिक्षा नितीलाई दोष लगाएर आँफू पन्छिन मिल्ने अवस्था भने निजी क्याम्पसहरूलाई अवश्य छैन । सरकारकै मुख ताक्ने हो भने शिक्षा स्तरको त के कुरा जनतको मुखमा माड लगाउने सम्मको ग्यारेण्टी छैन । सत्ता, सरकार अनि समीकरण तीन ‘स’ मा सिमित हाम्रो देशको प्रशासनले केवल सोझा जनतालाई सोझै झुक्याएको सबैलाई सजिलै थाहा हुन्छ । ‘स’ को भुमरीमा रुमलिएको शिक्षाकेन्द्रीत सरकारी निकाय विद्यार्थीहरूको भविष्यप्रति संवेदनशील भने पटक्कै देखिँदैनन् ।

एउटा विद्यार्थीले भविष्यमा के पेसा अपनाउने भन्ने निर्णय आँफैमा एक जटिल र महत्वपूर्ण सवाल हो । बेलैमा निर्णय गर्दा धेरै समय खेर नजानुका साथै आप्mनो लक्ष्य प्राप्त गर्न समेत सहयोग मिल्ने कुरामा सायदै असहमती हुन सक्छ । त्यसको ठीक विपरीत समयमै उचित निर्णय लिएर लक्ष्य प्राप्तिको पथमा नलाग्ने हो भने आप्mनो जीवनको अमूल्य समय त्यसै खेर जानुका साथै आर्थिक उन्नतीमा समेत ठेस पुग्ने देखिन्छ । अझै गलत निर्णयले त काममा जाँगर नआउने, ईच्छाशक्ति मर्ने हुनुका साथै देशको समग्र अर्थतन्त्रले नै घाटा व्यहोर्नुपर्ने कुरा नकार्न सकिन्न ।

हाल नेपालमा यस्ता करिअर काउन्सिलिङका काम केवल निजी प्रयासबाट संचालित केही कन्सल्टेन्सीहरूले मात्र गर्दै आइरहेका छन् । विदेशमा पढ्न चाहने विद्यार्थीहरूका लागि लक्षित गरेर सुरुवात भएता पनि अहिले भने सबै विद्यार्थीहरू यसबाट लाभान्वित भएको पाइन्छ । सरकारी एवम् निजी शैक्षिक संस्था दुवैबाट दश जोड दुई बराबरको पढाई सकेपछि स्नातक तहमा आँफू के पढ्ने भन्ने विषयको अन्यौल धेरैलाई रहने कुरा नौलो भने पक्कै होइन । एसएलसीको पाठ्यक्रममा यी कुराहरू समावेश गर्न सके धेरै विद्यार्थीहरूको भविष्य निक्र्यौलमा महत्वपूर्ण उपलब्धी हासिल हुने बताउँछिन्, साउथ डेकोटा स्टेट युनिभर्सिटीमा अध्ययनरत पोखरेली छात्रा अन्जु थापा । उनको विचारमा यस्ता कार्यक्रमहरूले शैक्षिक बेरोजगारी कम हुनुका साथै देशले दक्ष जनशक्ति उत्पादन गर्न समेत टेवा पुग्नेछ ।

विश्वका कैयौं मुलुकहरूले शिक्षा क्षेत्रमा गरेको लगानी र त्यसका उपलब्धीहरू हेर्ने हो भने अमेरिका अग्रपंक्तीमा आउँदैछ । यस्तो विकसित शिक्षा स्थितीको पछाडि कुनै जादुको छडी नभएता पनि यसबाट हामी नेपालीले सिक्ने थुप्रै कुराहरू छन् । यहाँको शिक्षा प्रणाली हेर्ने हो भने हामी सबैजसो शैक्षिक संस्थामा एक वा एकभन्दा बढी काउन्सिलिङ सेन्टरहरू भएको पाउँछौं । यस्ता करिअर काउन्सिलिङ सेन्टरहरूले पढाईका क्रममा पर्ने समस्याहरूका समाधानका उपायहरूका साथै अनेकौं सल्लाहहरू दिई विद्यार्थीहरूको पढाइप्रति तृष्णा जगाउने काम पनि गर्दछन् । त्यसैगरी उनीहरू विद्यार्थीहरूको भविष्यप्रति सँधै चिन्तित रहनुका साथै विभिन्न अध्ययनमुलक परीक्षाहरूमा विद्यार्थीहरूलाई सामेल गराएर भविष्यमा अलि नै भित्री मनदेखि इच्छा गरेको पेसा या व्यवसाय रोज्नको लागि मद्दत गर्दछन् ।

आँफू विद्यार्थीहरूको मुहारमा सधैं हाँसो अनि भविष्यमा केही बन्नको लागि मनोबलसहित उचित सल्लाह दिने काममा सन्तुष्ट अनि हर्षित भएको बताउँछिन्, युनिभर्सिटी अफ टेक्सस आर्लिङटन स्थित युनिभर्सिटी एडभाइजिङ सेन्टरकी निर्देशक जेनेट किन । उनले अजकालका वैज्ञानिक प्रयोगले गर्दा आप्mना विद्यार्थीहरूको मनोभावना बुझ्न सहज भएको र त्यसै अनुरुप उचित सल्लाह दिन पनि मद्दत मिलेको भन्दै खुशी प्रकट गरिन् । दिनहुँ आप्mना समस्याहरू लिएर आँफू सामू आउने गरेका विद्यार्थीहरूको मुहारको हाँसो फर्काउने दृढ प्रयास आप्mनो रहने पनि निर्देशक किनले बताइन् ।

भौतिक शाष्त्रकी प्राध्यापक डा. भोइला रकले कक्षामा पढाउने क्रममा आँफू गतवर्ष नेपाल भ्रमण गरेको कुरा सुन्दा खुशी लाग्यो । हुन पनि उनको भौतिक शाष्त्रको कक्षामा पचास प्रतिशत भन्दा बढी विद्यार्थी नेपाली नै हुने गरेको उनले बताइन् । हुन सक्छ त्यसैको अभिप्रायले उनलाई नेपाल भ्रमण गर्न प्रेरित ग¥यो । नेपाल भ्रमणका क्रममा उनीलाई लोडसेडिङ र यातायातको निकै समस्या भएकाले सबै नेपाली विद्यार्थीलाई इन्जिनियर बन्ने सुझाव उनको थियो । देश पुनर्निर्माण गर्नुपर्ने कुरा अमेरिकामा अध्ययनरत नेपाली विद्यार्थीहरूलाई थाहा भने पक्कै छ । त्यसैले पनि धेरै नेपाली विद्यार्थीहरू इन्जिनियरिङ विषयको अध्ययनमा आकर्षित भएको बताउँछन्, बायो इन्जिनियरिङका विद्यार्थी कुशल पोख्रेल । आँफूलाई करिअरको बारेमा त्यति जानकारी एवम् सल्लाह नेपालमा पाउन गाह्रो भएकै कारण एम.बि.ए. का लागि अमेरिका आए पनि यहाँको उचित सल्लाह पाएर आँफू इन्जिनियरिङ पढ्नमा आकर्षित भएको उनी भन्छन् ।

वास्तवमै शिक्षा क्षेत्रको विकास आजको प्रमुख अवश्यकता हो । यस्तो देशको विकाससँगै जोडिएको अनि विद्यार्थीहरूको भविष्य निक्र्यौल गर्ने करिअर काउन्सेलिङलाई केही चासोका साथ हेरी पाठ्यक्रमको रुपमा विकास गर्न सके देशको मुहार फेर्न केही मद्दत अवश्य पुग्ने थियो । यसका लागि सरकार निजी शैक्षिक संस्था अनि अभिभावक लगायत संयम विद्यार्थीहरू नै जागरुक हुनुपर्ने देखिन्छ ।

अमेरिकामा संविधानसभाको चासो

डालस टेक्सस नेपाली विद्यार्थीहरूमाझ एक परिचित गन्तव्य हो । हजारौंको संख्यामा रहेका नेपाली विद्यार्थी र यहाँका प्रवासी नेपाली समाजका सदस्यहरूमाझ आजकल चर्चाको विषयवस्तु बनेको छ, संविधानसभा ।
...संविधानसभा के हो र यसले गर्ने महत्वपूर्ण निर्णयहरू भन्दा पनि चर्चाको विषय भने भिन्दै छ । त्यो महत्वपूर्ण चर्चाको विषय हो, यसको लम्बिएको निर्माण प्रक्रिया र समय । विश्लेषकहरूका आधारमा यो लम्बिएको समय संविधानसभाको बचाउका लागि भनिएता पनि नेपाली विद्यार्थीहरू यसलाई केवल नेपाली जनताको आँखामा छारो हाल्ने काम मात्र हो भनेर बुझ्छन् । यस कुरामा पूर्ण सहमत छन्, घारीपाटन पोखरा बसोबास भई हाल डालस टेक्ससमा अध्ययनरत छात्र राम शर्मा बास्तोला । उनको विचारमा जनताको दवावमा र कुर्चीको लालचमा भएको सहमतीले देश र जनतालाई असली संविधान दिने कुरामा शंका भएको ठान्छन् ।
हुन पनि जेठ १४ गते राती भएको सहमती हेर्ने हो भने पनि राष्ट्रिय भावनाभन्दा दलीय हित अनि कुर्सीमोह नै दर्शिन्छ । सहमतीका आधारमा बन्ने भनिएको राष्ट्रिय सरकारको पर्खाइमा बसेका नेपाली जनता भने नेपाली राजनीतिका नायकहरूको अनैतिक चरित्र हेरेर नै रनभुल्ल परेका छन् ।
हरेक दिन हुने सभा, गोष्ठी, सम्मेलन, अन्तरवार्ता अनि अन्तरक्रिया कार्यक्रमहरूमा राष्ट्रिय सहमती अनि नेपाली जनताको मर्मलाई उच्च मूल्यांकन गर्ने हाम्रा नेताहरूको भाषण केही प्रतिशतमात्र काममा परिणत हुने हो भने पनि देशले आजको अवस्था देख्नु नपर्ने बताउँछन्, नेपाली विद्यार्थी संगठन, युनिभर्सिटी अफ टेक्सस आरटिङ्टनका अध्यक्ष आशिषध्वज कुँवर । आफूँ कम्युटरको विद्यार्थी भएतापनि नेपाली राजनीतिमा चासो रहेको र नेपाली राजनीति सत्ताको खेलमा मात्र केन्द्रीत भएकोले संविधान निर्माणको महान् कार्य रोकिएको उनको विचार छ ।
आप्mना दैनिक व्यस्त दिनचर्याका वावजूद पनि नेपालको खबर सुन्न आतुर यहाँका नेपाली समुदाय दैनिक हडताल, लोडसेडिङ, बन्द, चन्दा–आतंक, लुटपाट, राजनैतिक असमझदारी, अपहरण, ज्यादती इत्यादीका खबरहरूले झनै त्रासित हुने गरेका छन् । आफ्ना परिवार अनि इष्टमित्रहरूको कुशलमंगलको समाचारको सट्टा दैनिक रूपमा घट्ने घटनाक्रमले नेपाल विकासक्रममा अझै ५० जर्ष पछि परेको भान हुने कुरा नकार्दैनन् यहाँका प्रवासी नेपालीहरू ।
फेसबुकमा बन्ने समूहहरू अनि गुगलमा हुने संविधान सभा सम्बन्धी खोजहरूले पनि यही कुराको पुष्टि गर्छ कि विश्वभरि छरिएर रहेका नेपालीहरूको एक प्रमुख चासोको विषय हो, निर्माणाधीन संविधान । संविधान कसका लागि बनाउने र कसले बनाउने भन्ने बारे एउटा सामूहिक विचारमा सबै नेपाली रजनीतिज्ञ तथा बुद्धिजीवीहरू सहमत हुनुपर्ने कुरामा जोड दिन्छन्, युनिभर्सिटी अफ टेक्सस आरलिङ्टनकामा अध्ययनरत पोखरेली विद्यार्थी मनिष न्यौपाने । उनी भन्छन्, निर्माणाधीन संविधान नेपाली जनतामाझ राजनीतिक दलहरूको मागी खाने भाँडो भएको छ । हुनपनि वर्तमान राजनीतिक अवस्थालाई गौर गर्ने हो भने त्यो कुरा स्पष्ट देखिन्छ । नांगा राजनीतिक नेताहरू संविधानको खोल ओडेर आप्mनो लाज छोपिरहेका छन् । आरोप प्रत्यारोपको होडबाजीमा पिसिएको संविधान गर्वमै तुहिने हो कि भन्ने शंक गर्नेहरूको गिन्ती प्रवाशी नेपालीहरूमा पनि कम छैन ।
एक अमेरिकी नागरिकले एक प्रसंगमा मलाई तिमीहरूको संविधान कहिले बन्छ भन्ने प्रश्न गर्दा म आश्चर्यचकित नभई उनको उत्तरको खोज गर्न बाध्य भएँ । संचारमाध्यमको विकास देखेर दङ्ग परें अनि उसको उत्तरमा मैले भनें– हामीहरू पनि त्यहीं प्रश्न गर्छौं दिनहुँ हाम्रा राजनेताहरूलाई, अनि उनीहरूको उत्तरमा गाँसिएको हुन्छ उनीहरूकै रजनीतिक योगदान अनि सहमतीको खोक्रो आदर्श । कता कता मलाई अप्mठेरो लागिरहेको थियो आफूँले उत्तर दिन नसकेकोमा ।
हामी नेपालीहरू विदेशीभूमिमा आप्mनो पहिचानको लागि विश्वमानचित्रमा नियाल्न नभ्याए पनि ‘शान्ति देश’ का नागरिक भनेर चिनाउन गर्दथ्यौं । त्यो स्थिती रहेन आज । विभिन्न विकसित मुलुकहरूको बारम्बार अफ्ना नागरिकलाई नेपाल भ्रमण नगर्न दिएको सुझाव र अन्तराष्ट्रिय आतंकवादको सूचिबाट नहटेको नेपालको प्रमुख राजनीतिक दल इत्यादीले गर्दा हाम्रो परिचयमा अस्तित्वमा परेको महशुस धेरैलाई भएको छ । नेपाल र नेपाली जनताले परिचय अनि अस्तित्वसँग गाँसिएको निर्माणाधीन संविधान समयमै बन्नको लागि विश्वभरी छरिएका नेपालीहरूको एउटै आवाज, ‘धेरै भयो कुर्सीको तानातान, समयमै चाहियो हाम्रो संविधान ।’

यहिनै हाम्रो गाई र खेत किसानको संसार मानो लाएर मुरी उब्जाउने आयो है असार .....रिमि र झिमि पानीमा पर्‍यो, रसायो मुल पनिकिसानलाई भनि उर्लेर आयो असारे भेल पनि ......नेपाल पर्यटन परिषदले आयोजना गरेको छैंटौ असारे महोत्सवमा वडा. नं १४ का समाज सुधार तथा महिला उत्थान आमा समूहको असारे गित सँगै पोखरा वडा.नं १४, चाउँथेमा शुरु भएको सारे महोत्सव गएको वर्षहरुमा भन्दा केहि भब्य सु सम्पन्न भएको छ । छोरेपाटनको मिरुवा फाँटमा शुरुको दुइ वर्ष गरे पछि , लेक साइडको खहरे, सेदीको वगर, लेखनाथको खुदीमा र हेम्जामा गरेपछि अहिले चाउँथेमा गरेको छ । असारे महोत्सव पर्यटन परिषदलेनै किन गर्‍यो त - " अहिले मानिसहरु खेतवारी बेचेर गाडी किन्नमानै वढि लालायित देखिन्छन् । बरु गाडी बेचेर खेत किन्नु पर्दछ भन्ने भावना यहाँको जनतामा चेतना जगाउनु अनि जति सक्दो पर्यटकहरुलाई यहाँ समावेश गराएर हाम्रो देशको खेती किसानीको वारेमा विभिन्न मुलुकमा हाम्रो पहिचान पुर्‍याउनु उद्देश्य महोत्सवको हो ।" नेपाल पर्यटन परिषदका अध्यक्ष बच्चुराम तिवारी भन्नु हुन्छ म सबै कृषकहरुलाई खेतवारी जोगाई राख्न अनुरोध गर्दछु । खेती राम्रो हुने ठाउँको जग्गा नबेच्न, बेच्नै परे पनि खेति अयोग्य जमिन बेच्न म अनुरोध गर्न चाहन्छु । आफ्नै ठाउँमा, आफ्नै जमिनमा उब्जेको जस्तो मिठो अनि पोषिलो वाहिर किनेको हुँदैन । त्यहि भएर आफ्नो जग्गा जमिन नवेच्न म सबै किसानहरुलाई विनम्र अनुरोध गर्दछु । पहिलो पटक आयोजना गर्दा मानिसमा त्यति उत्सुकता थिएन तर अहिले सबैमा निक्कै उत्सुकता भएको छ ।
धेरै भन्दा धेरै आन्तिरिक पर्यटनले महोत्सव अवलोकन गर्न आउनु भएको छ । वहाँले यसो भनि रहँदा त्यहाँ लगभग दुइ हजारको हाराहारीमा मानिसहरु रोंपाई महोत्सव अवलोकन गरि रहेको थियो । मानिसहरुको आउने जाने क्रम पनि निक्कैनै थियो । पर्यटकको क्षेत्रमा अब कृषकहरु पनि सहभागी बनाउनु पर्दछ भन्ने हाम्रो मान्यता हो । पर्यटक भित्रयाउनु मात्र ठुलोकुरो होइन । उनीहरुलाई खाना दिन सक्नु पर्दछ । जुन ठाउँमा उब्जनीहुन सक्दैन त्यहाँ घर बन्नु पर्दछ जहाँ उब्जनी हुन्छ त्यहाँ खेती गर्नु पर्दछ। वीउ सबै उखेली सक्यो व्याटे गरा भो खालीकुनामा हली, छेउमा बाउसे, विचमा खेताली........पोखरा सबै मौसमका लागी भन्ने हाम्रो मुल नारा लाई लिएर महोत्सव शुरु भएको हो । " यो अहिलेको सिजन भनेको पर्यटक आउने सिजन होइन तर जुन सुकै मौसमको लागि पोखरा उपयुक्त छ भन्नको लागी यो महोत्सवको आयोजना गरिएको हो ।" अध्यक्ष तिवारीको भनाई थियो । "अबका दिनहरुमा यी यस्ता कार्यक्रमहरुको जानकारी हामीले वेब साइडमा राखेर पहिलेनै यस्तोकुराहरुको जानकारी दिने सोंच बनाएका छौं । जसले गर्दा पर्यटकहरु रोपाईं महोत्सवकै लागि भनेर आओस् ।" छैंटो असारे महोत्सबमा अमेरीकन प्रोफेसरहरुको समूह लगायत अन्य ठाउँवाट गरेर लगभग ३५ जनाको त्यहाँ उपस्थिति रहेको थियो ।

MY TRIP TO NEWYORK

Its been a great pleasure to be here in Washington DC right now. Its kind a cold but I am really loving this weather now. well I started my holiday from DFW Airport Texas. then i flew to Georgia Atlanta and from there to Dullas Washington DC.
I was very excited to see my brothers and sister and my lovely bhanjee. We had fun in Newyork. Its a great place to see lots of things ans views. We had a beautiful experience in METRO TRAIN which is way faster in the croded city like Newyork. After the long trip to newyork, we were heading towards Dallas TX, we went to Georgia Atlanta. I with my Ashish dai, had delicious food in atlanta for that we drove about 4 hours . We drove about 26 hours to Dallas but we still had fun.

CHANGE and Our HOPES.

CONGRATULATIONS ! to all the supporters of OBAMA including me for the victorious success of the CHANGE we need now and ever. I was up late last night watching CNN, suddenly it showed 299 electrol votes, which was one of those moments which was mostly awaited by most of the Americans and the rest of the world who wants CHANGE. Thousands of people in Chicago got the golden oppertunity to see their first African American president elected for the first time in the history of the united states.
As I remember that Martin Luther King Jr. mentioned in he LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL that they has been waiting for the rights and the change for more than 340 years then. I was really impressed by the letter he wrote and the speech he made called I HAVE A DREAM. Junior on that letter was inspiring every oppressed citizen to fight for their rights and civil liberties.
I was satisfied and glad that united states's first statement for thanking all the voters including, african-american, latinos, and ASAINS. Offcourse, he must not forget that he was supported by majority of the immigrants and lower middle class americans no matter white, brown, black, or yellow.
As soon as OBAMA was elected, meaasges from different corners of the world started coming congratulating him. China is ready to talk to him and for the further relationship. He has been suported by most of the world excluding PAKISTAN. There is also a reason behind it, we will probably see after January 2009 I guess. Minister for Foreign Affairs of NEPAL also congratulated him through BBC NEPALI SEWA. that is a good signal of the international relationship.
Now I am living in TEXAS right now and I can tell that people are angry here in TEXAS. It is a republican place, most of the people whom I am associated with voted for McCAin and shocked last night by the result. As a whole it was not suprising nor shocking for me because I was guessing him as next president of one of the POWERFUL nations in the world. Hopefully he will do his job in favour of most of the people in the USA and offcourse we people living in the usa as immigrants. WE really wants some of the reforms that WE ARE PAYING 3 TIMES OF THE TUTION FEES THAN AMERICAN FOR THE SAME EDUCATION. Here I don't mean free but atleast he should cutoff some thing so that we could easily afford to survive in this expensive economy in the world. AND THE OTHER THING IS THERE IS NO OTHER WAY THAT PEOPLE COULD SURVIVE WITHOUT WORKING IN THIS ECONOMY. AS he has been saying let's see the real CHANGE.

दशैं आयो खाउला पियुला ..... कहा पॉला ? WALMART जौला ..क्रेडिट कार्ड घोत्तौला.......धत मत BURGER खादै बसूला .येस्तै छन अमेरिका माँ बसने नेपाली का दशैं उक्क्ति .हामी नेपाली संसारको जहा भयेपनी दशैं को महत्तो कहिले बिर्सिनाऊ र ३ डॉलर खर्चा गरेर भये पनी माटो ल्याएर जमरा रखने गर्चौ दशैं को लगी .well, its been said, we nepalese are celebrating our biggest festival here in the USA as far as possible. I am glad that we live in Texas where we are living with many Hindu communities from south India.We can visit our nearest hindu temple called hindu temple of Irving. We can get goat meat in our nearest market as well as can get a whole goat from nearby farm. I am a lucky guy that I know lots of people in this country from Nepal or I have many relatives here to celebrate with. We are planing to have a family picnic to Joo pool lake in Texas.
I still remember that we used to organize a dashain program back in Nepal where I was an active member of two of the youth clubs of pokhara, Youth for change Nepal, and JanaEkta Youth club Chauthe pokhara. I really enjoy working with my collegues in a club being an active member of a society. In 2006 I was the coordinator for the marathan competition organized by Janaekta Youth club pokhara. At that time we collect some funds with media coverage as well as lots of youth support and appreciations. I never forget the moments I spent involving myself in a social youth clubs. I am also a member of Phi Theta Kappa here in the USA which helps me for the schlarship in the University.
Getting back to Dashain, I have 20 years of celebrating moments in my heart and my mind that reminds my culture and the tradition being a Hindu. Here I am trying myself to convience that I am still following the same tradition in a different conditions and different environment. The point here I am trying to make is that we in the USA we do not get holidays in Dashain. I am working this thursday, which means I have no time to follow my tradition because work is important here and we are minorities here in the USA. We nepalese have to request, send e-mails, and convience by providing google information to our college professor that we are observing our biggest festival and could not attend the class this week.
As you all, residing outside Nepal, I am also missing my family and relatives in this wonderful moment, the blessings and the moments of sharing love and care with our love ones. the moments partying with my buddies, the moments watching the people enjoying in fares and the moments we see the crowd in the street, keeps on hiting my mind to realize myself to be a part of my own society after getting a degree in education and stand by myself economically in future.
After all, we are here for a purpose, that we should not forget and the most important thing that we should not forget is that we are also the part of our traditional society. As a matter of fact our culture and tradition relies on our obserations and followings during these fesivals. So, I hope and request all the nepalese society residing outside Nepal to celebrate Dashain with great respect, joy, fun, and love. We are the responsible parts of our society, it doesnot matters whereever we live in. lastly I pray Goddess DURGA to bless you all with wealth, power, and fame. Have a great DASHAIN.

A Long Trip to The United States

It was the second week of January when I left my native country of Nepal to come to America to further study. I was excited to visit a new country and also excited about the new people, their culture, and traditions. At the same time, I was feeling uneasy and sad to leave my family as I could clearly see the tears in their eyes when I was leaving my country at the Tribhuwan International Airport.

I left my country on that Friday night at around nine o’ clock and flew for about six hours to Dubai, the capital of Qatar. This was my first international trip, so I was feeling nervous and different at the airport. Although I was traveling with friends from Nepal, we had a hard time finding the right terminals. After a few hours, the plane took off and landed in Paris. I had a very difficult time at the airport understanding their language. We were tired of walking with our heavy loaded luggage and of asking people where to go. One lady officer from India helped us. I was tired and feeling sleepy, but I could not find a comfortable seat because the airport was so crowed. Eleven hours later, I finally landed at the Houston airport in Texas.

At the port of entry in the Houston airport, there was a big line and we only had one hour left until our next connecting flight to Louisville, Kentucky. I was tired of taking off my shoes, belts, and jackets at every security checking. The security personal asked several questions and we kept answering them. One of my friends got into trouble and was chased by a security dog. They opened his bags and found shampoo, toothpaste, and body sprays in his carry-on bag. They took all liquids from him because of the recent liquid bomb scare in London.

After we crossed the security check, I got lost somewhere in a terminal. My next connecting flight was in Terminal B, but I was somewhere in Terminal E. I had only forty-five minutes left to report for the next flight. I was walking around and looking for the terminal while carrying one hundred pound of extra weight. I decided to use the Terminal train, but I was unable to find Terminal B. I was nervous and afraid of missing my connecting flight because the International Office at Campbellsville University Louisville, Kentucky would be expecting me at the pre-arranged time. I anxiously checked my watch until twenty minutes before my flight and luckily I met one gentleman from my country and he helped me.

When I reached the Terminal gate for my departing flight, I asked that my other four friends get paged over airport’s loudspeaker. The gate agent replied, “Do you want to stay or go?” I was totally disappointed and compelled to board that flight. I was alone on the flight and missing my friends. I went to Campbellsville, KY alone and my friends arrived one day later.

I arrived at the campus one week after the spring semester started. I really enjoyed the countryside, lakes, and natural beauty of Kentucky. People were really nice there and they were ready to help others. After the spring semester, I planned to transfer to Northlake College in Dallas. Again, I flew to Dallas without the previous airport problems as I have already gained some travel experiences.

Religion in My Life

Religion has a significant impact on one's life. I grew up in a Hindu
tradition and formed Hindu beliefs. As a child I learned Hindu culture
in my family and my community. I believe in Hinduism and it has much
influential effect in my life. Similarly many aspects of Buddhism,
Confucianism, and Christianity are applicable in my life.
I believe on polytheistic belief of the Vedic faith and I pray to the
multiple deities of Hindu gods and goddesses. I feel like god is
looking at my every activity and he will punish or reward according to
our karma, all action good or bad produce effect in the future do
participate in most of the Hindu and Buddhist rituals, festivals, and
celebrations. Sometimes I do fasting in the name of the God who
created us and did many things for us. I remember the name of the holy
God most of the time .I believe he saves me every time when I gets
into a trouble. He shows me the right path to get success.
Buddhism is similar to Hinduism as Siddhartha Gautama was born and
raised in Hindu tradition. The four noble truth of Buddhism is mainly
applicable in my life. Whenever I am in trouble, I remember the word
"suffering" and it's true that it exists and there is a reason for
that. We can solve our problem if we could find the reason for the
suffering. After all, the eightfold paths or Nirvana is the actual
solution to the sufferings. The eight spoken wheel is the absolute
solution to the suffering exists in our life.
The deliberate tradition of Confucianism explained by Confucius is
most important to me. I respect myself and my family. They are
everything for me. I am really thankful to my family and especially to
my parents that they brought me up in such a great home environment.
This is explained as Jen and Chun- Tzu in Confucianism. The five
constant relationships he explained are the most important
relationships to maintain peace and harmony in our life. Similarly Li,
Te, and Wen are also the inspiring factor in my life.
In Christianity, I like the relationships with the holy God as our
creator and savior. The trinity explained as the father, the son, and
the Holy Spirit which I believe is the most important aspect of
Christianity. The forgiveness, prayer, and the relationship with the
God are really applicable in my life.
Although there are many differences, the similarities among the major
world religions help to maintain religious tolerance around the world.
The most important aspect of religion is that unifies and bonds people
and controls their actions. The religious laws help people to be
social and practice moral values. Finally, the similarities between
these world religious beliefs help people to be united and live
peacefully in society.

This evening, the Maoist leader will attend a gala dinner offered by the American government, which has still not removed the communist-inspired movement from the terrorist "blacklist". The prime minister will address the UN general assembly, which is expecting reassurance on matters of human rights.

Kathmandu (AsiaNews) - Despite the fact that his name and that of his organization are still on the terrorist "blacklist", Nepalese prime minister Prachanda will attend the gala dinner being held by U.S. president George Bush and by the United Nations, scheduled for this evening in New York.

The United States had put the Maoist movement on the blacklist of "rogue" organizations following the bloody uprisings in Nepal; now the pro-communist party is in power in the country, and for the first time in history a government leader from the Maoist movement has been received in the United States for an official visit.

In addition to the prime minister, the Nepalese delegation is composed of his wife, his personal secretary, the foreign minister, the Nepalese representative to the UN, and other diplomats. This is Prime Minister Prachanda's third trip abroad, after he took part in the closing ceremony for the Beijing Olympics following his appointment, and his official visit to India last week.

The trip to the United States will open this evening with a gala dinner; in the next few days the Nepalese prime minister is expected to speak in front of the UN assembly, on the occasion of the 63rd general assembly of the United Nations, while a face-to-face meeting with Bush has not been confirmed for the moment.

The mission to American soil is being followed closely by public opinion in the country, and by leading international diplomatic figures, who are expecting reassurances on matters of human rights and the struggle against terrorism. Yesterday, before arriving in New York, Prime Minister Prachanda stopped in Frankfurt, Germany, where he met with Nepalese diplomatic representatives in Europe, including the ambassadors to Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, and Great Britain.

He worked for the nation as a Senator for eight years. His political ideology is focused on change for the progress and peace.
Obama is against the war in Iraq and he said that he is going to stop the war with Al Qaeda also. His immigration reforms will unite the family and demand the skilled work force from rest of the world but strictly check the border. He said that he will respect the civil right and form law according to the civil right provided by the constitution. His health care plans include all Americans. It will be less expensive and easily affordable by all class people. He will also reward the innovators and the risk takers who have helped a lot to boost the American economy.
His vision is to change America in different aspect with his reforms and innovations. He is a pragmatic personality who is able to face any problem and he has a wide range of knowledge. He is an expert orator he can think in different aspect of the problem. His trust and credibility has been proved by his eight years service as a Senator of the United States. Now his supporters are eagerly waiting for his luck and circumstance for being the next president of the Unites States.
John Mc Cain is the only one republic candidate for the presidential election 2008. He was born on August 29, 1936 in Panama Canal Zone. His father and grandfather both served as US Navy and he is following the tradition of his family. From his childhood, he was quiet and silent. When his family moved to Virginia, he went to Episcopal High School, from where he was graduated. After high school, he went to United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. He graduated in 1958.
John Mc Cain is also a Vietnam Veteran who was almost been killed by the Vietnamese. He was also been kept in the jail in Vietnam for five and a half years. Then he started his second career as a politician. In 1987, Mc Cain started his political career as a Senator from Arizona. Again in September 1999, he announced his presidency for the presidential election 2000 as republican candidate. He was defeated by another strong republic candidate, George W Bush.
Although he is the only famous republican candidate, his reforms regarding to the issues are not so popular comparing to the democratic candidate. For the ongoing war in Iraq, he will send more troops to clear the war and to train the Iraqi military. He will build a strong border security to protect America from immigration problem. He will make the health care plan competitive and accessible to all American. As a war veteran and being a senator, Mc Cain gained a lot of experience to become a president. His personality is also in favor of being the next president of the United States.

My Wonderful Back Home

Home sweet home. That was july 08, a wonderful vacation and my back home program to my dreamland POKHARA. It was such a great trip to visit my family, all my relatives, and my friends. As a matter of fact I am proud to be a Nepali and i love my birthplace pokhara, such a wonderful place to visit and live. I was really missing my Pokhara, but the thing is you have to sacrifice for your career and safe future, that I should not forget I know.
When I was in pokhara, I have seen a huge change including infrastructural and social change. My little brother, sister, and lots of younger ganerations are changing to a new world. I am not surprised by that, because that was due to the revolution called NEW NEPAL.As a matter of fact every Nepali is expecting a real change in our country as I do. They are ready for the change and the real thing is nothing is happening regarding the positive change.
Scarcity of fuel energy is the major change I saw when I was there. I had a terrible experience regarding the petrol refill for my motorbike. I was in a line of not ust hundreds but of thousands for almost four hours to get not more than a gallon of gas. I was lucky that I got the oppertunity to refill that gallon of gas because moreoffen they say that they are out of gas after 400 to 500 people and may be they sell rest of the tank in a higher price in a different way. I have an evidence for that. Once I was told by a fruitseller at Prithiivi chowk that if I wanted some gallon of gas at the higher price. He added that I could get as much as I needed.
Besides the fuel scarcity, I had also experienced that some political power controlling in distributing the fuel. The YCL so called "social force" to control social evils, were controlling the distribution the fuel so that they could have a power to control over the most expensive and important thing of this time. I had a conversation for about 15 minutes with YCL to convience that I was in a line. That was a good arguementative conversation about a political army controlling over social matters.

Besides, US our monarchial kingdom has been changed into a democratic republic of Nepal, which is a drastic change in our political system of our country. I am updating myself everyday through the media like BBC NEPALI RADIO, KANTIPUR ONLINE, MYSANSAR.COM, and so on and sometimes i get frustrated that our leaders are still not ready for the change that we poeple want in our nation. they just wanna rule in a system which is benificial for them. they should not forget that the revolution was people's revolution, not a seven party or a maoist revolutuon. Right now Maoist shuld cooperate with all the parties no matter small party or a looser party. and rest of our 24 political parties should give maoist a chance that if they can change nepal to Switzerland , as they said. lastly i am really worried about our country's media freedom that our proposed President PRACHANDA has challenged the one of the active media of our country which has a great role during the people's movement.i will really appreciate your comment.

well..its kind of mixed feelings right now. I am focusing into the upcoming constitutional election in Nepal. Lots of comments, arguements, and misunderstandings are still there although the election is going to held shortly. i was shocked when i read the news about our underage candidates...not only one or two but 66 of them . not only this but also i am shocked about our candidates more than 250 who are still unable to prove themselves as a Nepali citizes. welll,,, whats goin on brother???? Are we doing or acting like a play ? Do our responsible government knows about the norms and nominations of the general elections? i still have doubts. some of our candidates for this election are below 20 ...then what they going to do to form our national constitution.
Our major political parties are also breaking rules by creating voilence. it seems like they actually are not representing peoples will.. all they are acting to be honest and making promise to hold a powerful position in the government.. everybody knows about this . I am telling this again because, after a long revolution we Nepali poeple were expecting something new and different regarding to us but everything is worse. there is no change and how could we expect a great change and a formation of new Nepal from them ? they still are trying to confuse us for their sake of power and money after the election. its preety clear....
One thing I don't understand is that why our economy is affected so badly by the revolution although there are a lots of revolution going on in many different countries in the world. I know we are trapped between two big nations but we are rich in our natural resources though. the other thing is all our manpower is not collected because of the revolution and lack of oppertunities in our country also.

Confucianism in China

Chinese culture is influenced by the philosophical traditions of Confucianism. A religion or an ethic based on Confucians social teachings. He was a great teacher whose teachings have profoundly affected many people in the world. “In 130 BC the Confucian text became the basic discipline for the training of government officials, a pattern that continued until the Empire collapsed in 1905” (Smith 119).
The tradition of Confucianism started in China and spread to Korea, Vietnam, Japan, and to communities of South Asian immigrants worldwide with Chinese cultural and political dominant. Moore wrote in his book:
The Confucian tradition actually began well before Confucians (The Latinate form of Kong Fuzi, “master kong’) and is known in Chinese as ruijia or the school of the RU vu meaning weak or yielding. Ru also referred to the learning to the learned aristocracy of the defeated sharing dynasty (ca. 1776-1050 BCE) who nevertheless continued to share on specialist in li( ritual and protocol) that is in determining appropriate behavior and techniques of government . (Moore 6)
The first teacher whose principle focuses on creating harmony in human society had a modest life. He lost his father in his early childhood and grew up learning many things including his family’s problems. When he started working as a government officer, his principles, and norms and values helped him to spread his reputation. He spends more than a decade visiting states to states, proffering unsolicited advice to administrators. For his teachings Smith wrote,” Confucians was undoubtedly one of the worlds greatest teachers prepared to instruct virtually all the disciplines of his day, he was a one-man university” (Smith101).
“The meaning of self-cultivation and social political reform: Confucians believed that political order must be established on social order, and social order must come from individual cultivation “(Tsai 1). It basically explains the interrelation between politics and society. If every individual will be rectified then the whole nation will be governed and peaceful. Therefore, Confucians said “Their hearts being rectified, their persons were cultivated. Their persons being cultivated their families regulated. Their families being regulated their states were rightly governed. Their states being rightly governed the whole kingdom was made tranquil and happy (Tsai, 1).
Confucians stresses filial piety and family values through articulating the five basic human relationships. These relationships are the relation between ruler and minister, between father and son, between husband and wife, elder and younger brother, and between friends .For this he remarked “The life of the moral person is an exemplification the universal moral order…the life of the vulgar person, on the other hand is a contradiction of the universal moral order” (Novak 119).
Although Confucianism is a similar to Buddhism, Coniferous was a different personality than the common religions or spiritual leader. Philip Novak describes his different personality as follows:
Confucius is different kind of sage, unlike the great spiritual personages of the Western traditions; he is not a prophet out in the wilderness, proclaiming the revelation of God and railing against human indifference. Nor does Confucius fit the profile of the classis spiritual hero of India, the yogi, who through ascetic withdrawal from the world and sustained psychophysical discipline taps superhuman reservoirs of wisdom. Rather, Confucius is, unabashedly, an educator. He is a learner and a teacher, a person-in-community who encourages nothing less than the full moral maturity of the entire body politic. (Novak 119)
At the time when Confucius was born, the Chinese society was facing many social problems. Disintegration of the feudal system was one of the major social problems and many individuals and families were suffering from that social turmoil. When he started working on that issue, his principle was to create a perfect society by creating by perfect individual leaders. He thought that excellent individuals created excellent societies and in a similar manner, excellent societies would nurture excellent individuals. For this Molloy in his book stated:
According to Confucius, excellence comes partly from the cultivation of an individual’s virtues and intellect. Thus, education is essential. We should recognize, thought, that for Confucius education meant more than knowledge; it also involved the development of skills in poetry, music, artistic appreciation, manners, and religious ritual. Confucius valued education because it transmitted the lessons of the past into the present. He believed that much of the wisdom required producing excellent human beings is already expressed in the teachings of the great leaders of the past. Convinced that the past provides fine models for the present, Confucius thought that education could show the way to wise and happy living. (Molloy 239)
In China the three main religions Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism are compared to the sun, the moon, and the planets as the necessary past of a complete universe. As a common tradition people started unifying the pictures and statues of the Buddha side by side in friendly poses. This is a great example of religious tolerance in China.
Confucianism has played a prominent role in shaping the social norms and expectations of Chinese society. Here Confucianism serves more as a cultural institution rather than a specific religion. That’s why Moore wrote, “Confucianism has remained the dominant influence in the realms of the socialization, social structure, and ideals and practice of government” (Moore 98). Confucianism’s impact on Chinese society could be seen easily in the realm of the Chinese government. In China, emperors were called “Son of Heaven” and they were assisted by cultured, educated bureaucrats steeped in Confucian ethics.
Confucius is revered as the first teacher, and his followers throughout the centuries have made education a high priority. In China, even the poorest people strove to educate their sons in the hope that at least one would pass the civil service examination, bringing prestige and influence to their family. This proves him as the best teacher whose teachings are still popular among the worlds largest population. In a show of respect of Confucius, people celebrate his birthday on September 28th as Teacher’s Day every year.
Although the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) and MaoTse-Tung’s anti-Confucian ideals were particularly destructive to the Confucianism theory, it is often actively promoted in countries like Taiwan, Singapore, and Korea. However, the Communist Party still promotes Confucianism due to its historical and tourism value. The economist (US) wrote, “On topics ranging from political philosophy to personal ethics, old Confucian ideas are gaining new currency”( Confucius makes ).

College Athletes Should Be Paid

College athletes are an important part of the college. They always play for the reputation of the college and the money they make goes to the college. Being an important part of college sports, they should be paid besides the scholarship they get.

First of all, college athletes bring in millions of dollars to their schools. For example, the University of Miami received about eight million dollar for the Miami Hurricanes playing in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. Without the hard work, teamwork, and cooperation among the players it would be very hard to win such a big game. So they should also get some portion of that big money.

Secondly, college athletes are not allowed to work so they have to manage money by themselves to spend on things like new clothes, laundry, cell phones bills, and several miscellaneous things. Some athletes might have financial problems in their home. Even some parents might need their offspring’s help. In these cases a college athlete could have a hard time managing financial help.

Thirdly, college athletes should be paid for their special skills in a particular sport. College athletes work hard, concentrate on sports and dedicate their time and effort to sports. They could not even manage enough time to study to make good grades in their classes like other colleagues. But they have got special skills in sports, which may be physical strength, body structure or defensive skills.

All in all, college athletes are more concentrated on sports to make money and for the college’s reputation. Some athletes could not be graduated or become professional athletes to make money in their lives. So college athletes should be paid to make them professional in the future as well as for the money and reputation that a college gets from the athletics.

Becoming an American Idol

The American Idol is one of the most popular reality shows in America. It is an annual American televised singing competition, which began its first season on June 11, 2002. Part of the idol franchise, it originated from the UK reality program Pop Idol. The program seeks to discover the best singer in the country, through a series of nation wide auditions. The outcome of the latter stages of this competition is wholly determined by the public voting. There are mainly three judges, who critique the contestant’s performance in order to facilitate the voting. The contestants have to face several stages to be an American idol.

First of all, all the interested candidates are required to sign on to the web at www.americanidol.com and print out a copy of the release form to fill out and turn in at the audition in order to grant permission to be seen and heard by the producers’ cameras. False information may disqualify the contestant from the audition. Then a contestant has to sing a song and the three judges decide whether the contestant is chosen for the second round.

Hundreds of contestants will have to face three judges’ decision in Hollywood for the semifinals. The three judges narrow the initial field of a few hundred down to a group of twenty-four semi finalists. Beginning with the fourth season, the semi finalists were split into two groups separating the male contestants from the female contestants, promoting an equal number of each sex to the finals.

In the finals, which lasts eleven weeks, each finalist performs a song live in front of a live studio audience. After each week’s performance, viewers vote by phone and IM, and the lowest vote getter is eliminated. The finalists receive millions of vote in the finale. It is said that there were more votes for the American Idol than there were votes in the last presidential election. The last one standing wins the title of American Idol.

Finally, the American Idol will have name, fame and money. Since it is a great platform for new singers, it is getting more attention from the viewers and new talents.

HAPPY GRADUATION DAY

This is not my graduation snap.I was just invited to join the party. Mr. Binod Dhakal, a very helpful and energetic person was graduating on that day. It was a rainy day but there were lots of excitements relating to that day. Me, Manoj,Mr. Binod and his lovely family were there at chapel hall of the Campbellsville University, KY USA. He helped me a lot at the university when we just arrived in the USA with the energy and excitement but there was no experience. Lastly I wish him all the best for his career and wanna say THANK YOU BINOD DAI.

POKHRELI GIRLS IN UK ARMY

This is not just some fitness fad that has taken over the Pokhareli girls. You might probably think so seeing 200 girls exercising at the Pokhara stadium every morning. But these are British Army hopefuls.
Following the recent British Army decision to recruit Nepali girls in the British Army, the Pokhareli girls have been excitedly taking necessary trainings as preparation. For the first time in 200 years, the British Army has decided to recruit Nepali girls.

The girls who are taking part in the trainings are mostly those who have family members in the army — either the British Army or the Indian Army.
One such hopeful is Mamata Gurung from Bhandardhik, Lekhnath municipality, whose grandfather was in the British Army and father in the Indian Army.

“I have always wanted to be in the army. I have applied to be in the British Army because of family influence,” she said.
As a trial only 20 girls will be recruited in the British Army this year. The criteria to be eligible for selection are that the candidate should be at least 17-and-half years of age, and should have passed the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination.

Mamata, who has just turned 18, is confident about being selected and so is Soni Gurung from Ram Bazaar, Pokhara.
Soni said that she would be selected if the selection process is fair.
Eager to join the British Army, Soni said, “I am undergoing training as I always wanted to join army. My father is in Indian army and brother in Singapore.”

Pokhara’s Manish Rana said she was undergoing training as she feels that it would be better to try out for the British Army now than remained unemployed later.
Ram Prasad Gurung of the Ex-Army Education Foundation Centre said that the number of girls undergoing training for the British Army tryouts has increased tremendously after the news regarding the recruitment was published. This being the first time the centre is training 95 girls free of cost.

Gurung said that the girls wouldn’t have to go to battlefield but would be placed for in official work and security purposes.Britain will be recruiting Nepali girls from 2009 on a regular basis.

Three arrested in Bedford store murder Mr. Rajbanshi

BEDFORD – Bedford police have arrested three men – including two brothers who were convicted in a 1997 scheme to rob a restaurant manager in 1997 – in connection with the fatal shooting of a convenience store clerk earlier this week.

Frederick D. Hughes, 38, Theodis Dodson Jr., 39, and Jeffrey O. Dodson, 38, were held in lieu of $1 million bail each on a capital murder charge, Lt. Kirk Roberts said. The Dodsons, who are brothers, also are being held on a charge of aggravated robbery in Watauga, he said.

The Dodson two brothers were convicted of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery from a 1997 incident in which they told police they planned to kill the manager at the Furr's cafeteria where they worked in North Richland Hills.

According to Tarrant County criminal court records, Jeffrey Dodson received probation, but later had the probation revoked and was sentenced to three years in prison in April 1998. Theodis Dodson received deferred adjudication, but that was also later revoked, and he was sentenced to six years in prison in October 1999 he was sentenced to six years in prison.

The clerk, 28-year-old Gaurab Rajbanshi of Euless, was found dead shortly after 4:40 p.m. Monday at the D&S Food Mart at 1501 E. Pipeline Road.

Mr. Rajbanshi had moved to Euless from Nepal and had a cousin who lived in the area, police said.

Police said video footage of the incident captured by the store's surveillance system showed that one or two of the men were making a purchase and the clerk had the cash register open when one man shot him for no apparent reason.

"The surveillance photos brought in tips and leads and that led us to other people," Lt. Roberts said. Law enforcement officials from Arlington, Hurst, Watauga, Fort Worth and the U.S. Marshal's Service office helped in the arrests.

Mr. Hughes also is a suspect in a March 31 aggravated robbery at Viva Food Store in Bedford. In that case, a man was seen leaving the store in a gold Chevy Suburban.

The Dodson brothers also are suspected in a June 4 robbery at the One Stop Pantry in Watauga.

In both the Watauga and Bedford cases, the victims were pistol-whipped.

In the 1997 case involving the Dodson brothers, a police report said that because they brothers worked at the cafeteria, they knew the manager's daily deposit routine – an afternoon run to the Wells Fargo bank a block away.

Theodis Dodson said in the police report that because the manager would know him on sight, he would have to kill him after the robbery. He said he and planned to use a potato as a silencer on his .32-caliber pistol.

The plan was never carried out because police received a tip and arrested the brothers.

”Press freedom is my fight”

Journalists took a lead in the 15 months long struggle for democracy and freedom of expression in Nepal. They refused to lie down and be silent. This resulted not only in the arrest of hundreds of journalists but also spilled over and into their reporting.

The 3rd of May is the International Day of Freedom of Expression. It is also the day when the Nepalese Federation of Journalists (FNJ) will publish its annual report.

In addition to descriptions of last year’s many attacks on freedom of expression, the report also contains a list of arrested journalists. Kanak Mani Dixit is on that list. Ever since King Gyanendra seized power in February 2005, the editor of the Himal South Asian Magazine has had many rides in the back of blue police vans.

At the beginning of April this year Kanak Mani Dixit was arrested and charged with disturbing public order. He had dared to say out loud - on the biggest shopping street in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu - what he often writes in columns and articles: “the King is the main reason for this crisis and he is hindering the media from working freely”. He was released after a few hours.

Three days later, however, he did not have such luck. On the 8th of April he took to the streets again, ignoring daylong curfews imposed by the Government. He was arrested yet again.

Why does he find it necessary to fight for the right to freely express one self? The answer to this question is delivered by his wife, who carries the handwritten response out of prison.

“In Nepal we have neither democracy nor freedom of expression – and you can’t have one without the other. As a journalist and a democrat this is very much my fight.”

Kanak Mani Dixit got 90 days of detention under the Public Security Act for breaching the curfew and could not participate in celebrating the success of the democratic movement later the same month.

Nepal: UN brings together local leaders for talks on human rights in peace process

Teams from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal today participated in a series of meetings with members of political parties, civil society and local authorities in three districts across the country to discuss human rights in the peace process.

These meetings, which follow previous ones organized by OHCHR-Nepal in Saptari and Sunsari districts, focused on the challenge of ensuring that human rights are respected in the peace process, OHCHR said in a news release.

“OHCHR-Nepal believes it is essential for the peace process, including Constituent Assembly elections, that human rights information is communicated to, and discussed, at the local level,” said Lena Sundh, Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal.

The presence of UN experts at these meetings to share views with local leaders and members of marginalized groups “will also assist OHCHR to continue its work on discrimination and social exclusion,” she added. Today’s meetings took place in Panchthar, Birgunj and Kaski districts.

During their previous meetings, the experts stressed that political actors must accept that respect for the rights of others, calling this “the cornerstone of successful elections in a multi-party democracy,” OHCHR said.

In attendance at today’s meetings were Rodolfo Stavenhagen, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people; Doudou Diene, the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism; and Yozo Yokota and Chinsung Chung, members of the Sub Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Minorities.

Nepal’s decade-long armed conflict, which brought a death toll of 13,000 and paralyzed life in the countryside, came to a formal end with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord last November. The Security Council then deployed the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), which is mandated to support the peace process by monitoring the arms and armed personnel of the former adversaries and by assisting the election for a Constituent Assembly.

Prachanda - hero or villain?

The recent public appearance in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, of Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal, alias Prachanda, led to much excitement.
But for some, it is ironic that a man who has led a ruthless war that took the lives of 13,000 people is being treated like a hero.
For many others, he is a hero, who has given a voice to millions of downtrodden people in one of the poorest countries in the world.
So is he a hero or villain?
Demands
When Prachanda launched an armed rebellion in 1996, Nepal had just restored multi-party democracy after 30 years of direct rule by the king.
A peaceful people's uprising in 1990 had forced the then King Birendra to become a constitutional monarch and after a smooth transition, a new constitution was written and democratically elected leaders were in power.

Maoists' reclusive leader

Despite concerns about corruption, democracy was slowly taking root.
Schools, roads and bridges were being built and businesses were expanding.
Though records have fluctuated, the GDP growth rate in 1995/96, when the Maoists began their insurgency, was 5.4%, an encouraging figure for Nepal.
The immediate reason given by the Maoists for the declaration of war was that the government rejected their demands "without giving them any attention".
Many of those demands related to political and social reforms which most Nepalis would find acceptable.
However, few agree that the government's rejection of the demands was enough reason to declare a war which has caused Nepal enormous suffering.
Violence and intimidation
Accurate independent figures about the economic costs of war are not available.

The Maoists have used violence to push demands
However, according to Finance Minister Ramsharan Mahat, the damage to infrastructure alone amounted to $246m - around 15% of Nepal's current annual budget.
The Maoists have used threats, extortion and killings to get their way.
They have killed poor, innocent people and those who have criticised their top leaders.
The war has encouraged and spread a culture of intimidation and violence, which is bound to have a long-term impact in a society which was credited for peace and harmony.
Prachanda and others have defended these tactics, arguing that during war such incidents do occur and that they regret mistakes.
Many find it difficult to agree. They argue that Prachanda and many top Maoist leaders are, in fact, more feudal and hypocritical than those whom they regard as such.
There appears to be some truth in this.
'Well-fed' rebel
Prachanda speaks passionately about the need to dismantle feudal structures to create a proletarian society but he has remained quiet about his own elevation as a demi-god by his supporters.
The rich and ruling elite in Kathmandu, who the Maoists view as feudal and want to destroy, has been left untouched throughout the war, whereas poor and ordinary villagers have suffered.

After seeing Prachanda's pictures, a teacher at a village school recently told me: "Prachanda looks very well-fed. In fact, his healthy diet is bought from the money extorted from poor people like myself.
"Or else, where does he get the money from?"
For Prachanda India was an expansionist foe.
Out of the first nine points in his 40-point demands submitted to the government in 1996, seven were directed against India.
However, it has been an established fact that during much of the insurgency both Prachanda and his deputy, Baburam Bhattarai, have spent time in India.
There have been credible reports that Indian authorities have covertly co-operated with the Maoists at times.
That explains why after the insurgency started they have rarely been critical of India.
'Power of the gun'
This does not mean Prachanda is devoid of virtue.
Many middle-class villagers like Prachanda would have preferred an easy route in life. However, he chose a difficult path to pursue his conviction that "power comes from the barrel of the gun".
Risking his life, he did derive that power and made the powerful ruling elite of the country realise that they cannot take their privileges for granted.
Prachanda claims to have dismantled the feudalistic social structure in the villages under Maoist control. To an extent this is true.
There is also a growing awareness about social and political rights in rural Nepal because of the insurgency.
For now Prachanda seems to have accepted that there is no alternative to multi-party democracy in Nepal.
But many would continue to question whether all the killing and destruction was necessary for him to accept what Nepal's major communist parties accepted a long time ago.
Much will depend on how much he can deliver in Nepal's future political set-up.

World's shortest person in Nepal

He is 14 years old, but only 20 inches tall.

Heis probably the shortest person in the world. Khagendra Thapa Magar
from Baglung is 14 years old but only 20 inches tall! He is now being
shown to public in the city of Pokhara. You will have to buy tickets to
see him; and the amount collected will be used for his treatment.

His medical condition and the cause are still unknown. No body in his
family has had this or similar type of condition before. Khagendra
doesn't go to school; he stopped going to school after his classmates
started pulling and pushing him around.

If he's really 20 inches; he's certainly the shortest person in the world because
according to Guinness Book of World Records, Gull Mohammad was 22.5
inches.

When I (SUMAN) was in Pokhara, I saw him at our radio station that is Himchuli F.M. 92.2 MHz he is really surprising.

Government grants better conditions to old Gurkha soldiers

LONDON (AFP) - The government on Thursday bowed to pressure to improve conditions for Nepalese Gurkha soldiers, who have served in the British armed forces for two centuries.
But the decision to grant them full pensions and other rights was immediately criticised by groups representing the famed Nepalese soldiers, who said it was too restrictive.
It also fell short of demands by Gurkhas and their supporters, including in the smaller opposition Liberal Democrat party, to remove barriers
to their becoming British citizens.
"We are not happy with this because it only affects those who left after 1997," said retired major Tikendra Dal Dewan, chairman of the British Gurkha Welfare Society in Kathmandu.
Defence chief General Sir Richard Dannatt hailed the announcement of better conditions for the Gurkhas as a "historic day".
"I am delighted that serving Gurkhas will have the same terms and conditions of service as their counterparts in the wider army," he said in a statement.
"Their contribution to operations around the world has been and will continue to be a major contribution to Britain's defence commitments."
Derek Twigg, a junior defence minister who announced the move, said serving Gurkhas and those who retired on or after July 1, 1997 will be able to transfer from their Gurkha Pension Scheme to the main Armed Forces Pension Scheme.
The decision takes effect April 1, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.
Gurkhas -- known for their fierce loyalty, bravery and razor-sharp kukri fighting knives that they carry in battle -- already receive the same pay and tax benefits as the wider army, Twigg added in a statement.
The statement said Gurkhas who have served for at least five years will have the chance to transfer to other army units to pursue their careers, and they will also have the same leave entitlements as the rest of the army.
Work is under way to see how women can be recruited into the Brigade of Gurkhas for the first time, it added.
The Sun newspaper said the move will see pensions for riflemen with 15 years' service increase from 1,200 pounds to at least 6,600 pounds, with senior ranks receiving a figure closer to 7,000 pounds.
Gurkhas began serving as part of the Indian army in British-run India in 1815. Since Indian independence in 1947, Gurkha pensions have been linked to those who served in the Indian army, not those in the British army.
There are currently about 3,500 Gurkhas in the British ranks.
Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, where three-quarters of workers are in agriculture and the average income is around 100 pounds per year.
The move will cost the British government around 20 million pounds a year, the Sun said.
But in the Nepalese capital the announcement met with little enthusiasm.
"Its good news for serving Gurkhas, but it's not very good news for those who left before 1997," said retired captain Lok Bahadur Gurung, adding that there are around 20,000 retired Gurkhas in Nepal and the new pension agreement will only affect "around 2,000".
Another Gurkha welfare group expressed similar concerns.
"This is good news for serving Gurkhas, but not for the Gurkhas who fought in the Second World War and the Falklands," said Padam Bahadur Gurung, president of the Gurkha Army Ex-Servicemen's Organisation (GAESO).

We were lucky to meet up with $ujeeta. It was great to connect with someone who rocks and who has a true sense of humor. Well, I am not into politics but as far as I am concerned, if the Maoist is good and if they don’t use terror then I wouldn’t mind them, taking over Nepal.

Umm…. I’d rather prefer a guy 5 years older then me.

नेकपा माओवादीका अध्यक्ष पुष्पकमल दाहाल (प्रचण्ड) ले सरकाले आउंदो जेठ महिनाभित्रमा संविधानसभाको चुनाव नगराएमा नेपाललाई बैशाखमै गणतन्त्र घोषणा गर्ने चेतावनी दिएका छन्।
मंगलवार काठमाण्डौमा आयोजित एक आमसभालाई पहिलो पटक संबोधन गर्दै उनले त्यस्तो चेतावनी दिएका हुन्।
संविधानसभाको चुनाव बिथोल्न विभिन्न स्वदेशी र विदेशी षड्यन्त्र भैरहेको उनको भनाई थियो।
नेकपा माओवादीले सशस्त्र विद्रोह शुरु गरेको मंगलवार १२ बर्ष पुगेको छ।
माओवादीहरूले २०५२ साल फागुन १ गते शुरु गरेको उक्त विद्रोह गत वर्ष सरकार र माओवादीबीच शान्ति सम्झौतामा हस्ताक्षर भएपछि अन्त्य भ‌एको थियो।

एघार वर्षो उमेरदेखि दरवारमा मुमा वडमहारानी रत्नको सुसारे भएर काम गरेकी एक वृद्धा र उनकी छोरी शान्ताले सुनाएको घटनामा आधारित भएर पत्रकार कृष्ण अविरलले लेखेको रक्तकुण्ड उपन्यास अहिले नेपाली पुस्तक वजारमा हट केक हुन पुगेको छ । "तीनवटा मेशिनगन एकैपटक एउटै व्यक्तिले चलाउन संभवै हुँदैन, मलाई प्रष्ट थाह छ, त्यहाँ दीपेन्द्रजस्तै मुकुण्डो लगाउने अरु नै थिए ।"दरवार हत्याकाण्ड प्रत्यक्ष देखेको बताउने शान्ताले उपन्यासकारलाई भनेकी छन् । उनका श्रीमान् दरवारका कर्मचारी त्रिलोचन सोही राति भोजमा मारिएका र त्यसवखत आफूले गोलीकाण्ड प्रष्ट देखेको उनले अविरलसँगको वार्तालापमा भनेकी छन् । राजा वीरेन्द्रको वंशनास हुने गरी भएको सो घटना षडयन्त्र भएको पुष्टि हुने अन्य प्रमाण पनि भएको उनको भनाई छ- "एकातिर रक्सीले चुर भएका दीपेन्द्रलाई खोपीमा पुर्‍याइएको भन्ने अर्कोतिर १० मिनेट पछि तीन वटा मेशिन गन बोकेर आयो भन्ने कहाँ मिल्छ ।" पछि भने स्वचालित हतियार पड्केर मरेको भनिएको थियो । दीपेन्द्र ढलेको ठाउँमा हतियार पनि नभएको छानविन प्रतिवेदनमा उल्लेख भएको रक्तकुण्डमा उल्लेख छ । डा. राजिवराज शाहीले प्रश्न सोध्न नपाइने पत्रकार सम्मेलन गरेर नाटक गरेको उनको अर्को तर्क छ । वुवाको पंचायती व्यवस्था फाल्न २०३५ सालमा जनमत संग्रहको घोषणा र ४६ मा प्रजातन्त्र घोषणा गरेको भनी ज्ञानेन्द्रले विरेन्द्रमाथि रिसइवी साँधेको उपन्यासमा उल्लेखित छ ।

शान्ता सुरुमा १८ वर्षो उमेरदेखि कोमल र २०४१ मा आमा रिटायर्ड भएपछि रत्नको सुसारे भएर काम गरेको उनको भनाई छ । हाल ७५ वरपर पुगेकी शान्ताकी आमा भने रत्नसँगै दाईजोको रुपमा दर्वार भित्रिएकी थिइन्, उपन्यास भन्छ ।

दरवार भनेको यौन, षडयन्त्र, चाकडी अनि गोली र वारुदको अखडा भएको रत्नकी सुसारे एक वृद्धा र उनकी छोरी शान्ताले रक्तकुण्डमा बताएका छन् । "वास्तवमा भन्ने हो भने राजदरवारका सुसारेको जीवन भनेको नर्कको जीवन हो, वृद्धाले थपिन्, मैले त जेठी -शान्ता र कान्छि -दीपा छोरीलाई पनि सुसारे बनाउन चाहेकी थिइन । वडमहारानी रत्न सरकारबाटै हुकुम भएपछि नाई भन्नै सकिन ।"

राजा महेन्द्रको मृत्युको कारण हर्टएटेक नभई आत्महत्या भएको, महेन्द्र र विपिको दोस्ती विग्रे पछि विपिलाई नै राजाले जेल हालेको, त्रिभुवन अति कामूक राजा भएको, भरत गुरुङ र डीवी लामाले दरवारका सदस्यका लागि केटी सप्लाई गर्ने गरेको र केटी काण्डमा नै पछि धिरेन्द्रले अधिराजकुमारको पद छाड्नुपरेको अनि विरेन्द्र पनि तिनै केटीहरुसँग लाग्दा ऐर्श्वर्यसँग नतमस्तक हुन परेको कुरा पनि उपन्यासमा उल्लेखित छ । पारस, देवयानी, सुप्रिया, गरिमा राणा आदिका प्रसंग पनि उपन्यासमा उल्लेखित छन् ।

"अहिलेको सेनाको लेफ्टीनेन्ट जनरल छ नि रुक्मांगत कटुवाल, -पुरानो वर्तालाप) त्यो पनि दरवारमै हुर्केको हो, त्यसलाई हामी ठूलो धने भनेर चिन्थ्यौं । दरवारका एक जना कर्मचारीको नाम पनि धने भएकाले उसलाई सानो धने भनेर चिनिन्थ्यो, रत्नको मायाले त्यो सारै वदामास भएको थियो ।" शान्ताले भनेकी छन् ।

एक सय ४४ पृष्ठ लामो उपन्यासको मुल्य एक सय एक रुपैयाँ राखिएको छ । सुरुमा दुइ हजार एक सय प्रति, पछि पुसमा नौ हजार र माघमा १० हजार प्रति छापिएको भनिएको पुस्तकमा २२ भाग छन् । हाल लेखक अविरल भुमिगत भएको र शान्ता तथा उनकी आमाले अमेरिकाको यात्रा तय गरिसकेको बताइन्छ ।

राजधानीका आपर्ूर्ति सुचारु राख्न वाणिज्य विभागका महानिर्देशकको संयोजकत्वमा उच्चस्तरीय अनुगमन समिति गठन गरेको छ । 'बजार अनुगमन र स्थानीय निकायस“ग समन्वय गरी आपर्ूर्ति सुनिश्चित गर्ने जिम्मा समितिलाई दिइएको छ,' स्रोतले भन्यो । तर्राईको समस्या समाधान छिटो नभएमा पर्न सक्ने समस्याका बारेमा यो सजगता अपनाइएको होे ।

राजधानीमा पेट्रोलियम पदार्थ अभावका कारण सडकमा सवारी साधन पनि निकै कममात्र देखिन थालेका छन् । सीमित पम्पले मात्र पेट्रोलियम बिक्री गरेकाले त्यहा“ लामो लाइन देखिन्थ्यो । निजी क्षेत्रका सबैैजसो पम्पमा पेट्रोल/डिजेल छैन भन्ने बोर्ड टा“गिएको देखिन्थ्यो ।

आयल निगमस“ग मौज्दात कम हु“दै गएकाले पेट्रोलियम वितरणमा थप कडाइ गर्ने निर्ण्र्ाासरकारले गरेकोे छ ।

बैठकले सेना, प्र्रहरी र सहकारीले सञ्चालन गरेका गरी ९ पम्पलाई मात्र पेट्रोलियम बिक्री गर्न दिनेसमेत निर्ण्र्ाागरेको छ । 'सोेमबारदेखि सेना, सशस्त्र प्रहरी, प्रहरी र साझाको पम्पले मात्र पेट्रोल बिक्री गर्ने छन्,' निगमका निमित्त प्रमुख उमेश दाहालले भने । उपभोक्तालाई अनावश्यक रूपमा मौज्दात राख्न निरुत्साहित गर्न बिक्री परिमाण पनि सीमित गरिने भएको छ । गाडीले ५ लिटर पेट्रोल पाउने छन् भने मोटरसाइकलले २ लिटर मात्र

निगम प्रवक्ता इच्छा विक्रम थापाले मुख्य भन्सार नाका वीरगन्जबाट सवारी साधन आवागमनमा समस्या उत्पन्न भएपछि भैरहवा हु“दै पेट्रोलियम ल्याउन थालेको बताए । ६० प्रतिशत पेट्रोलिय आयात वीरगन्जबाट मात्र हुन्छ ।

यसबाहेक खाना पकाउन ग्यास पनि भैरहवा हु“दै ल्याउने प्रबन्ध निगमले मिलाएको छ । '४ सय ५० टन ग्यास बोकेका २५ वटा बुलेट भैरहवातर्फपठाइसकिएको छ,' दाहालले भने ।

The statue, a tribute to the king of Nepal who was murdered in a bloody massacre in 2002, stands shrouded in a common blue tarpaulin, a benign symbol of the latest chapter in the gruesome struggles that have gripped this country for hundreds of years.

The cloaking of the statue in Bragga, a village high in the Himalayan Mountains and several days' walk through a layer of clouds from the nearest paved road, was ordered by local Maoists. They have conducted a vicious rebellion against the current king and the country's military, which the monarch controlled until relinquishing that power and others last spring.

The insurgency over the past several years has brought the country to a standstill on occasion with strikes and bitter fighting, which has left 13,000 rebels, civilians and soldiers dead. Some people say the number is closer to 25,000.

Reacting to the conflict, many Western countries - including Canada, the United States, Britain and Australia - have reduced Nepal to the status of a quasi-forbidden zone, issuing no-travel advisories to their citizens.The warnings have sharply reduced the number of tourists coming to the country for trekking and climbing through the grandeur of the Himalayas.

We chose to defy the Canadian government's advice - as did many people from other countries - and go to Nepal in late September for one of the optimal times - after the monsoons and before winter - to visit the mountains.

The other travel window is in the spring - at the end of winter and before the monsoons.

You can take the easy way to see the Himalayas (Himal means snow-capped mountain) by boarding a plane in Kathmandu for the short hop around Everest.

Or you can summon up all your strength and sense of adventure, pull on your hiking boots, slip into your backpack and follow the donkey dung on one of the many trekking routes into the thin air of this remote region.

We chose the latter and spent 23 days ascending with great effort to almost 5,500 metres or about 18,000 feet - and then descending, at a leisurely pace - through stunning landscapes of rice paddies and banana palms, stands of bamboo, pine forests that reminded us of Canada, subarctic terrain above the tree line and countless apple orchards, corn fields and gardens full of cabbages and pumpkins. In all we trekked for 300 kilometres.

And, of course, there are the mountains, capped with dazzling white snow, made luminous by the bright sun, and bearing such names as Pisang, Chulu, Annapurna, Tilicho and Gangapurna.

We, in this case, are three moderately mad retired guys, Bob Johnston, 66, Ned Ellis, 54, and myself, 64, who were not above accepting a certain amount of deference from the many young people, mainly from Australia, Israel and the Netherlands, whom we bumped into along the way.

There were people of other nationalities - French, German and Spanish - but they travelled in packs of 10 or 12 and rarely ventured outside the comfort zones of their own groups for supplementary discourse.

This trip actually begins in Kathmandu, a small capital by Asian standards with 1.5 million people, but with the chaotic living conditions you might expect to find in cities that are 10 to 20 times larger. (It would not surprise me if Nepalis found our cities to be equally confusing.)

After five people were killed in unrest in Lahan, the violence and looting spread to Janakpur on Wednesday, Birganj and Biratnagar on Thursday.

The root of the crisis is deep, long-standing bitterness among the madhesi population. Discriminated against by governments in the past, they saw that they would be denied political representation in proportion to their numbers by the interim constitution too.

Exploiting this could be religious and royalist groups with powerful allies in a rabidly anti-Maoist Bihar government across the border. Many of the arsonists who went on a systematic rampage in central Janakpur on Thursday were not known to anyone

Nepal to erase king from currency

Nepal's central Bank is planning to remove all images of the king from future notes and coins.

Samples of alternatives images have already been submitted to the government for approval.

Since Nepal has had its own currency, the king's portrait or name has always been inscribed on it.

Mass protests last year forced King Gyanendra to surrender most of his powers. Anti-royal Maoists are due to join the government soon.

Finance Secretary Vidhyadhar Mallik says the Nepal Rastra Bank has already submitted nine different sample images to the Council of Ministers.

The council is expected to decide which ones to endorse soon.

The samples include portraits and images of Nepal's national heroes such as the Buddha and Princess Sita who are revered in Buddhist and Hindu mythology.

They also include images of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

A coin depicting a farmer ploughing a field is already in mass circulation while a note with Lord Buddha's image on it is expected to be issued soon, officials say.

Referring to the coin with the farmer, Mr. Malik says "It is the first coin that hasn't mentioned the king's name on it".

If everything goes according to the plan, the new denominations will come into mass circulation by May or June.

Anti- monarchist feeling has been strong since the protests last April which resulted in King Gyanendra abandoning a 15-month-long period of direct rule.

Earlier this month the authorities cancelled a holiday commemorating the birth of Nepal's first king.

Gautam Buddha - The Originator of Buddhism

The word 'Buddha' is a title and not a name. It means 'one who is awake' in the sense of having 'woken up to reality'. It was first given to a man who was born as Siddhartha Gautama in Nepal 2,500 years ago. He did not claim to be a God and he has never been regarded as such by Buddhists. He was a human being who became Enlightened, understanding life in the deepest way possible.

Siddharta was born into the royal family of a small kingdom in nepal called Siddharthanagar. According to the traditional story he had a cloistered upbringing, but was jolted out of complacency on understanding that life includes the harsh facts of old age, sickness, and death.

He left home to follow the traditional Nepali path of the wandering holy man, a seeker after Truth. He practised meditation under various teachers and then took to asceticism. Eventually he practised austerities so severe that he was on the point of death - but true understanding seemed as far away as ever. He decided to abandon this path and to look into his own heart and mind. He sat down beneath the pipal tree and vowed that 'flesh may wither, blood may dry up, but I shall not rise from this spot until Enlightenment has been won.' After forty days, the Buddha finally attained Enlightenment.

Buddhists believe that he attained a state of being that goes beyond anything else in the world. If normal experience is based on conditions - upbringing, psychology, opinions, perceptions, and so on - Enlightenment is Unconditioned. It was a state in which the Buddha gained Insight into the deepest workings of life and therefore into the cause of human suffering, the problem that had set him on his spiritual quest in the first place.

During the remaining 45 years of his life he travelled through much of northern India, spreading his teaching of the way to Enlightenment. The teaching is known in the East as the Buddha-dharma - 'the teaching of the Enlightened One'. Travelling from place to place, the Buddha taught numerous disciples, many of whom gained Enlightenment in their own right. They, in turn, taught others and in this way an unbroken chain of teaching has continued, right down to the present day.

The Buddha was not a God and he made no claim to divinity. He was a human being who, through tremendous efforts, transformed himself. Buddhists see him as an ideal and a guide who can lead one to Enlightenment oneself.

Arbour says Peace process will test commitment to Human Rights in Nepal

Kathmandu, January 22: United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour said that Nepal's peace process is a test to its commitment to human rights.
"Nepal's commitment to human rights will be tested through this peace process," she said in her closing statement at western city, Nepalgunj, Human Rights Community Interaction on Discrimination and Social Exclusion, a statement issued by OHCHR-Nepal said.
"If the Jana Aandolan in April 2006 was a signal that the Nepalese people were demanding their rights, the peace process now must ensure that all Nepalese people are able to fully exercise and enjoy these rights," said Arbour. The constitution-making process must be one in which the principle of equality of all people becomes the basis for action to address and eradicate longstanding discrimination and social exclusion, she added.
The UN High Commissioner also said Nepal has a historic opportunity to take practical and measurable steps to begin to eradicate longstanding discrimination, which has resulted in the profound social exclusion of millions of its people.
"Since my arrival in Nepal, including here today in Nepalgunj, I have heard about discrimination suffered by Dalit people, Madhesis, indigenous peoples, women and girls from many backgrounds, persons with disabilities, sexual minorities, and many other groups," she said.
Arbour stressed that recent events in Nepalgunj have highlighted the need to recognize and address issues of exclusion through dialogue and a greater understanding of these problems.
Discrimination and exclusion deny individuals and communities the simple human dignity that is the basis of equality and the fundamental foundation of all human rights; and, the Government of Nepal has an obligation in international law to address these issues of deep-seated inequality and discrimination, she said.
Arbour noted that the new Citizenship Act is an important start in addressing this cause of exclusion, "though my Office remains concerned about discriminatory provisions related to women".
She further said it is also essential to ensure that decision-making bodies at all levels are more representative of the diversity of Nepalese society, and especially that they include membership from traditionally excluded groups such as Dalits, Madhesis and indigenous peoples.

एउटा फड्को: कैयौं चुनौती

सोमवार जारी गरिएको अन्तरिम संविधान र त्यसको लगत्तै स्थापना भएको अन्तरिम संसदले नेपालको राजनीतिलाई एउटा नयाँ मोडमा पु-याएको छ। यो मोडबाट शुरू हुने यात्राको पहिलो प्रमुख गन्तव्य संविधान सभा हुनेछ। जेठ भित्र गरिने भनिएको संविधान सभाको चुनावपछि बनाइने नयाँ संविधान र नयाँ संसदपछि मात्र बहुचर्चित नयाँ नेपालको मार्गचित्र अघि बढ्ने छ।गत चैत बैशाखमा निरंकुश राजतन्त्र विरूद्धको संघर्षमा हात मिलाएका शान्तिपूर्ण मूलधारका सात प्रमुख दलहरू र १० वर्षदेखि हिंसात्मक अभियानमा होमिएको नेकपा माओवादीको सहमतिमा जारी गरिएको अन्तरिम संविधानमा करिब २५० वर्ष पुरानो राजतन्त्रलाई कुनै ठाउँ दिइएको छैन।
राजतन्त्र शक्तिविहीन हुने स्थिति आउनुमा मूख्य दोष राजालाई नै दिइएको छ यो नै नयाँ नेपाल तर्फको एउटा फड्को भएको ठानिएको छ। प्रस्तावित संविधानसभाले राजतन्त्रको भविष्य निर्धारण गर्ने तय भएकोले संविधान जारी गरेका दलहरूको त्यो विश्वासको परिक्षण त हुन बाँकी नै छ। तर बन्दुक र बारूदको बोली छोडेर संसदको माइक र टेबुलसम्म पुगेका माओवादी विद्रोहीहरूको विधिवत शान्तिपूर्ण अवतरण भने एउटा क्रान्तिकारी घटना हो।
त्यस्तै महिला, दलित, जनजाती र मधेशी समुदायको यति धेरै प्रतिनिधित्व यस अघिका कुनैपनि संसदमा थिएन।
उक्त दृष्टिकोणबाट पनि ३३० सदस्यीय यो संसद धेरै फरक छ।नेपालको राजनीतिक व्यवस्थामा रहेको अढाइसय वर्ष देखिको राजतन्त्रात्मक हाँगाविंगा छिमलेर जनप्रतिनिधिमूलक प्रजातान्त्रिक व्यवस्थाको कहिल्यै नमर्ने विरूवा हुर्काउने जिम्मेवारी अन्तरिम संसद समक्ष खडा भएको छ। तर यो काम गर्न सजिलो छैन। सवभन्दा पहिला त माओवादीका ८३ जना सांसद सहितको अन्तरिम संसदमा रहेका सबै निर्वाचित प्रतिनिधिहरू नभै पार्टीका मनोनित सदस्यहरू हुन्।अर्को महत्वपूर्ण कुरा नयाँ संविधान र नयाँ संसदको प्रयोग नेपालका लागि नयाँ होइन। गत ६० वर्ष यता पटक पटक नयाँ संविधान बनाउने, संशोधन गर्ने र विघटन गर्ने काम भएका छन्।तर ति कदमहरूका बावजुद नेपालको दरिद्र अनुहार फेरिन र नेपालीहरूको विवश मुद्रा बदलिन सकेको छैन। हाल उक्त परम्परालाई भङ्ग गर्ने कठिन र ऐतिहासिक चुनौति दोश्रो जनआन्दोलनपछि जारी गरिएको अन्तरिम संविधानका जन्मदाताहरू समक्ष खडा भएको छ।

STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT THE U.S. DIVERSITY VISA LOTTERY PROGRAM

The U.S. Diversity Visa Lottery is a popular but poorly understood program in Nepal. As Chief if the American Embassy Consular Section, I hope all Nepali citizens interested in applying for a visa will take the time to read this important information.
The Diversity Visa Program began in 1986 through a special act of the U.S. Congress. It is designed to increase diversity in the US immigrant population by providing nationals of countries that have had low immigration rates an opportunity to apply for a visa.
My officers and I live in Nepal and have benefited from the warmth and hospitality of the Nepali people. We are keenly aware of the cost incurred by those who apply for U.S. visas and what this means to the average Nepali citizen. None of my officers like disappointing someone by refusing their visa, but we are charged with following U.S. law and regulations. It is for this reason that I hope everyone will take the time to read the instructions before they pay the application fee. The application fee is established by Congress in U.S. law and is non-refundable once paid.
Here are some basic facts about Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery visas:
All information and forms for all types of American visas, including Diversity Visa immigrant visas, are freely available to everyone, through the internet and from the Consular Section
The DV program has two parts, the lottery (through which applicants submit their information electronically) and the immigrant visa application.
Diversity Visa Lottery winners do not win a visa, they win the chance to apply for an immigrant visa
Diversity Visa immigrant visa applicants must have 12 years of formal education (sitting for private exams without classroom work is not the equivalent).
You MUST list your spouse and all of your children on your original DV application or you will be disqualified: there are no exceptions to this rule
The requirements for an immigrant visa are not hard to understand, and everyone who wins the DV lottery receives detailed instructions in English and Nepali. DV winners get this information before they pay the fee and before they apply for an immigrant visa. Information is also available on the Embassy's website (http://nepal.usembassy.gov/), and the Consular Section of the American Embassy in Nepal is available to answer questions. People who fail to receive their visas do so because they fail to read or follow the instructions (for example, they fail to include all eligible family members in their lottery submission); they fail to qualify (they do not have a "plus-two" or qualifying work experience); or they provide fraudulent documents in an attempt to appear qualified when they are not.
The United States government does not employ outside consultants to facilitate visas. Consultants who claim to be able to improve your chances of qualifying for a visa are misrepresenting themselves. The Embassy works closely with the Nepal Police to investigate and prosecute both consultants and applicants who provide fraudulent documentation to the Embassy.
There is nothing more disappointing for me and my team than when we must refuse a DV applicant because he or she did not read and follow the program's rules. Please take the time to carefully read the instructions before applying for a visa and paying your hard-earned money. This is a very important step in your life and it is your responsibility to understand the rules. The American Embassy has issued over 7,500 DV immigrant visas since 2000 and it is a great pleasure for my officers and I to say, "Congratulations and welcome to the United States!" to the people who have followed the instructions and qualified for a visa.

Overseas Nepalis in North America can become a stronger force for social and economic development in their home country only by actively participating in the NRN movement, a meeting of North American Nepalis has concluded.
The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) invited leaders of 18 organisations representing Nepalis in North America for a day-long conference in San Bernardino, California on 6 January to discuss diaspora issues.
That such a conference was held, and well attended, points to the fact that the population of overseas Nepalis has reached a critical mass and is enthusiastic to contribute towards Nepal’s development.
The internet allows Nepalis in different parts of the world to network, and today they are better informed about events and trends in their homeland. This, coupled with the education they have received abroad and their experiences, gives the Nepali diaspora a unique perspective and understanding of the Nepali situation.

रिस्थितिमा कुनै नाटकीय परिवर्तन नभएमा १ माघमा अन्तरिम संविधान जारी भएपछि नेपाल नयाँ युगमा प्रवेश गर्नेछ। मुलुकको २४० वर्षको इतिहासमा पहिलो पटक शासनसत्ताको सञ्चालन जनता आफैँले गर्ने उक्त संविधान साढेदुई करोड जनताका तर्फबाट जारी हुनेछ। त्यसको नेतृत्व गर्ने सौभाग्यशाली प्रतिनिधि हुनेछन्, प्रधानमन्त्री गिरिजाप्रसाद कोइराला। सक्रिय राजनीतिमा करिब ६ दशक विताइसकेका ८४ वर्षीय वृद्ध र अस्वस्थ कोइरालालाई यो अवसरले नेपाली राजनीतिको त्यो सर्वोच्च उचाइमा पुर्‍याउने छ, जहाँभन्दा माथि जाने अर्को ठाउँ देखिँदैन। मुलुकको विशेष परिस्थिति र प्रधानमन्त्रीको यो अवस्थाले स्वाभाविक प्रश्न उठाउँछ– कोइराला पछि को?
शाही शासनको अन्त्यपछि ११ वैशाख २०६३ देखि मुलुकलाई नेतृत्व दिँदै आएका प्रधानमन्त्री कोइराला अस्वस्थताका कारण अहिलेसम्म तीन–चार पटक मात्र सिंहदरबारस्थित प्रम कार्यालय पुगेका छन्। प्रधानमन्त्रीको हैसियतमा गर्ने सामान्य कामकारबाहीदेखि महवपूर्ण राजनीतिक निर्णयहरू पनि बालुवाटारमै हुन्छन्। ४ जेठको प्रतिनिधिसभाको ऐतिहासिक घोषणा, २ असारको आठ बुँदे सम्झ्ौता, २२ कात्तिकको विस्तृत सहमति र ५ मङ्सिरको बृहत् शान्ति सम्झ्ौता तथा २९ मङ्सिरको अन्तरिम संविधानको निर्माण वा तयारी बालुवाटारमै भएको हो। करिब १० महिनायता मन्त्रिपरिषदका बैठक, मन्त्री, मुख्यसचिव, आफ्नो र अन्य पार्टीका नेता, विदेशी नेता र कूटनीतिज्ञहरूसँगको छलफल, भेटघाट र परामर्श लगायतका कामकारबाही पनि प्रम निवासमै हुने गरेका छन्।
बालुवाटार स्रोतका अनुसार, प्रायः सबैजसो कामकारबाहीको प्राथमिकता प्रमको स्वास्थ्यस्थितिलाई ध्यानमा राखेर निर्धारण गरिन्छ। त्यसैले अहिले सरकारले गर्नुपर्ने थुप्रै काम 'पेण्डिङ' मा छन्। मन्त्रिपरिषद्को बैठकमा पेश भएका कतिपय प्रस्तावमा समेत छलफल हुन सकिरहेका छैनन्। सुरक्षा निकायका प्रमुखहरूसँग हुने साप्ताहिक भेट आवश्यकता अनुसार मात्र हुने गरेको छ। प्रतिकूल स्वास्थ्य अवस्थामा शान्ति प्रक्रियाको धपेडीले गर्दा नेपाली काङ्ग्रेसको सभापतिको भूमिकामा कुनै सक्रियता छैन।
प्रमको अस्वस्थताले सरकारको दैनिक कामकारबाही प्रभावित नहोस् भनेर प्रधानमन्त्री कार्यालयका एक उपसचिवको मुकाम निवासमै बनाइएको छ। आफू सिंहदरबारमा नबसेका कारण सरकारी सेवामा आँच पुगेको चिन्ता स्वयं प्रम कोइरालालाई पनि छ। प्रम निकट स्रोतका अनुसार, पछिल्ला दिनमा कोइरालाले प्रधानमन्त्री कार्यालयको जिम्मेवारी पाउने गरी एकजना मन्त्री राख्नुपर्ने आवश्यकता महसूस गरेका छन्।
सामान्य अवस्था हुँदो हो त, यति महवपूर्ण पदमा बसेको व्यक्तिको स्वास्थ्यस्थिति राजनीतिक विवादको विषय बन्नेथियो। तर अहिले प्रधानमन्त्रीको यो अवस्थालाई मुलुकभित्र र बाहिर सामान्य रूपले लिइएको छ। एक नेताको भनाइमा, देशलाई नेतृत्व दिने निर्विकल्प व्यक्ति भएकै कारण उनको र देशको स्वास्थ्यको बीचमा सम्झ्ौता जस्तै भएको छ। चिन्ता र चाहना स्रोतहरूका अनुसार, महवपूर्ण राजनीतिक बैठकहरूमा आफ्नो अनुपस्थितिमा हुने निर्णयले कतै कुनै अप्ठेरो आइलाग्ने त होइन भन्ने चिन्ता प्रधानमन्त्रीमा पाइन्छ। जस्तै, अन्तरिम संविधानमा नपढी हस्ताक्षर गरेका कारण संविधानसभाको चुनावमा दुई वटा मतपत्र कायम गरिएको कुरा प्रमले सञ्चारमाध्यमबाट मात्रै थाहा पाएका थिए। वार्तामा सहभागी नेताहरूले माओवादीका कतिपय असङ्गत कुराको प्रतिवाद गर्न नसकेको गुनासो कोइरालाले गर्ने गरेका छन्। राष्ट्रिय जनावर गाई नराखे धार्मिक सद्भाव भड्किन सक्ने भनेर कोइरालाले नै हस्तक्षेप गरेका थिए।
ठाउँ–कुठाउँबाट आउने दबाब सामना गर्नुपर्ने बाध्यता पनि छ प्रधानमन्त्रीमा। भाञ्जी शैलजा आचार्यलाई भारतका लागि राजदूत बनाउन त्यहाँका सत्तासीन एक उच्च नेतामार्फत् भारतीय पूर्व प्रम चन्द्रशेखरले दबाब दिएको र यस्तो कुराले बेलाबखत आफूले निकै अप्ठेरो महसूस गर्ने गरेको उनले आफ्ना निकटस्थहरूलाई सुनाउने गरेका छन्। नेपालगञ्जमा जस्तै साम्प्रदायिक सद्भाव विगारेर संविधानसभा समयमा हुन नदिने, सङ्क्रमणकाल लम्व्याउने र मुलुकलाई अस्थिरतातर्फ धकेल्ने प्रयत्न हुनसक्ने आशङ्का पनि प्रमलाई छ।
कठिन अवस्थामा समेत नेपालको शासनसत्ता र शक्तिकेन्द्रहरूको नाडी छामेका कोइरालामा कतै आफ्नो कार्यकालमा भयरहित ढङ्गले संविधानसभाको चुनाव गराउने अठोट पूरा नहुने हो कि भन्ने चिन्ता पाइन्छ। उनका अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय मामिला सल्लाहकार डा. सुरेश चालिसे भन्छन्, “आफू धेरै समयको पाहुना होइन भन्ने उहाँलाई थाह छ। त्यसैले आफ्नै कार्यकालमा शान्ति प्रक्रियालाई तार्किक निष्कर्षमा पुर्‍याउन आतुर हुनुहुन्छ।” प्रमको त्यस्तो चिन्ता ५ मङ्सिरमा सम्पन्न शान्ति सम्झ्ौता जारी गर्दा वीरेन्द्र अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय सम्मेलन केन्द्रमा पनि व्यक्त भएको थियो, “अब मेरो एकमात्र उद्देश्य छ, जेठमा संविधानसभाको निर्वाचन गराउने। ढिलो हुँदा के थाहा... भूत पो हुने हो कि...!”
बिग्रिँदो स्वास्थ्य र ढल्किँदो उमेरले गर्दा आफूलाई सूचना र सल्लाह दिनसक्ने व्यक्तिहरूसँग भेटघाट गर्न रुचाउने प्रधानमन्त्रीले त्यसलाई निरन्तरता दिन सकिरहेका छैनन्। जबकि सम्भवतः दलभित्र र बाहिर सबैभन्दा बढी 'आफ्ना' बनाएका नेताहरूमा पर्छन् उनी। आफूलाई लागेको विषयमा सल्लाह लिन वा बहस गर्न उनले पूर्व प्रधानन्यायाधीश विश्वनाथ उपाध्याय, एमाले नेता भरतमोहन अधिकारी, पर्यटन व्यवसायी कर्ण शाक्य, वरिष्ठ अधिवक्ता गणेशराज शर्मा र पूर्वप्रधानमन्त्री सूर्यबहादुर थापालगायत पुराना प्रशासकहरूलाई भेट्न रुचाउँछन्। तर पछिल्लो समयमा कोइरालाका यस्ता भेटघाट लगभग बन्द भएको उनका निकटवर्तीहरू बताउँछन्।
अहिले कोइरालालाई बाहिरको वस्तुस्थितिका बारेमा 'अपडेट' गराउने काम गृहमन्त्री कृष्णप्रसाद सिटौला, छोरी सुजाता र भतिजा डा. शेखरले गर्दै आएका छन्। कुनै पनि पत्रपत्रिका नपढ्ने प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई सहयोगीहरूले बिहान बेलुकी त्यसदिनका पत्रपत्रिकाहरूको विषयवस्तु सुनाउने गर्छन्। यद्यपि बिहान–बेलुकी साढे ६ बजे एफएमको समाचार र बेलुकी सात बजेको टेलिभिजन समाचार हेरेर आफैँ 'अपडेट' हुन चाहिँ कोइरालाले छोडेका छैनन्। उनले अन्य काम चाहिँ कामको प्रकृति अनुसार राजनीतिक सहयोगीलाई जिम्मेवारी दिने र अन्तिममा मात्र आफूले हेर्ने गरेका छन्। अस्वस्थता र बढ्दो जटिल जिम्मेवारी हेर्दा लाग्छ कोइराला आफ्नो ज्यान फालेर यो सब काम गरिरहेका छन्। निजी चिकित्सक डा. मधु घिमिरे पनि भन्छन्, “स्वास्थ्यलाई प्राथमिकता दिएको भए कोइराला प्रधानमन्त्री नहुनुपर्ने थियो, जीउ त्यागेकै हो।” कोइरालापछि को? यस्तो प्रतिकूल परिस्थितिमा पनि अन्तरिम संविधान जारी भएपछि बन्ने अन्तरिम सरकारको नेतृत्व पुनः कोइरालाले गर्ने करिब निश्चित छ। माओवादीले पनि अन्तरिम सरकारको प्रधानमन्त्री गिरिजाप्रसाद कोइरालाले गर्ने बताइसकेको छ। नेका प्रजातान्त्रिक त्यसको विपक्षमा उभिने अवस्था छैन। महामन्त्री विमलेन्द्र निधिको भनाइमा गिरिजाप्रसाद कोइरालाले इच्छा राखेसम्म सरकारको नेतृत्व कोइरालाले नै गर्नेछन्। स्रोतका अनुसार, एमाले महासचिव माधवकुमार नेपालले प्रधानमन्त्रीसँगको भेटमा आफूले 'पहिले जस्तो खाली चेकमा हस्ताक्षर नगर्ने' बताएका छन्। तर, एमाले नेताको त्यो धारणाले प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई सन्तुलनमा राख्ने वा वार्गेनिङ पावर बढाउने सिवाय नेतृत्व नै परिवर्तन गर्नेसम्मको उद्देश्य राखेको विश्वास धेरैलाई लाग्दैन।
तर, यति हुँदाहुँदै पनि कोइरालाको इच्छाशक्तिले मात्रै धेरै दिन अघि जान सम्भव हुन्न। स्वास्थ्य र उमेरको दृष्टिले ढिलो–चाँडो प्रधानमन्त्रीको विकल्प भने खोज्ने दिन आउने निश्चित छ। त्यसबेला कोइरालाको उत्तराधिकारी को होला? उनको अनुपस्थितिमा जारी शान्ति प्रक्रिया, देश भित्र र बाहिरका शक्तिबीचको सन्तुलन निरन्तर राख्नमा उनको अनुपस्थितिको कस्तो प्रभाव पर्ला? अप्रकट रहने गरेका यस्ता जिज्ञासाहरू अब प्रकट हुन थालेका छन्। विद्रोही शक्तिको सत्तारोहण, राजसंस्थाको भविष्य जोडिएको शान्ति प्रक्रियालगायतका कारण खासगरी अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय समुदायले यो मामिलालाई निकै गम्भीर रूपमा लिएको पाइन्छ। प्रधानमन्त्रीका सल्लाहकार डा. सुरेश चालिसेका अनुसार, त्यसैले पनि विदेशी कूटनीतिज्ञहरूले भेट्दा प्रधानमन्त्रीको स्वास्थ्य लाभ, दीर्घायु र शान्ति प्रक्रियामा सफलताको कामना गर्ने गरेका छन्।
विकल्प खोज्नुपर्ने अवस्थामा के कोइराला जस्तो व्यक्ति सर्वसम्मत रूपमा चयन गर्न सक्लान् माओवादी सहितका आठदलले? कोइरालाको विकल्प खोज्नुपर्ने अवस्था आउँदा गलत तत्वले अस्तव्यस्त पार्न, अन्यौल फैलाउन र फाइदा उठाउन खोज्ने सम्भावना देखेका छन्, एमाले महासचिव माधवकुमार नेपालले। “तर, त्यसको सामना गर्नुको विकल्प छैन। विगतमा पनि हामीले निकै प्रतिकूलतालाई पनि अनुकूलतामा बदलेका छौँ”, उनको दृढता छ। कोइरालाको अनुपस्थितिको बारेमा नसोचेको बताउने नेका प्रजातान्त्रिकका महामन्त्री विमलेन्द्र निधिको धारणा पनि महासचिव नेपालभन्दा भिन्न छैन। भन्छन्, “तत्काल आइपर्ने अप्ठेरो, आपत–विपद र आवश्यकता पूर्ति गर्न पार्टीहरू सक्षम छन्।”
को हुनसक्ला कोइरालाको उत्तराधिकारी? नयाँ नेतृत्व राष्ट्रिय व्यक्तित्व भएको, देश हाँक्न सक्ने दृष्टिकोण भएको, अनुभवी, सबैलाई मिलाएर लान सक्ने हुनुपर्ने धारणा राख्ने महासचिव नेपाल त्यो विकल्प दिन आफ्नो दल तयार रहेको बताउँछन्। एमालेले त्यो मौका पाएमा महासचिव नेपालले त्यो अवसर पाउन सक्छन्। माओवादी अध्यक्ष प्रचण्डको चर्चा पनि चल्ने गरेको छ। धेरैलाई उनीहरू तत्कालै राष्ट्रिय र अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय स्तरबाट स्वीकार्य हुने विश्वास छैन। लोकतन्त्रप्रति प्रतिबद्धता व्यक्त गरे पनि माओवादीप्रतिको जनसमर्थन र उसको लोकप्रियताको मापन हुन बाँकी छ। आफ्नो दललाई यथास्थिति र उग्रताको विपक्षमा उभ्याउँदै आएको बताउँदै महासचिव नेपाल आफ्नो दलको सान्दर्भिकता यसरी प्रस्तुत गर्न खोज्छन्, “हामी विश्व परिस्थिति र राष्ट्रिय हितको तालमेल मिलाएर जान्छौँ।”
नेता निधि भने आफूले माओवादी बाहेक सबै दललाई प्रजातन्त्रवादी माने पनि विदेशीहरूले नमान्ने बताउँदै माओवादी त के एमाले पनि अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय रूपमा स्वीकार्य नहुने देखेका छन्। “भोट, प्रतिस्पर्धा, खुला बजार, राजतन्त्र सबै स्वीकार गरेर कम्युनिज्म त्याग्दा पनि विदेशीहरूले पत्याउँदैनन्”, निधि भन्छन्, “विगतमा अनुकूल अवसर हुँदा पनि वामपन्थीहरूलाई प्रधानमन्त्री बन्न दिइएको छैन। एमालेको नौ महिने शासन टिक्न नदिनु नै एउटा प्रमाण हो। किनकि राष्ट्रिय र अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय समाजले नेपालमा कम्युनिष्ट प्रधानमन्त्री चाहँदैनन्।”
प्रमका अर्का दावेदार पूर्व प्रधानमन्त्री भइसकेका नेका प्रजातान्त्रिकका सभापति शेरबहादुर देउवा हुनेछन्। अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय समुदायको साथ र समर्थन उनको सबल पक्ष हुनसक्छ। उनीमाथि लाग्दै आएको 'प्रजातन्त्र दरबारमा बुझ्ाएको' आरोप देउवाको कमजोर पक्ष हो। माओवादी लगायतका शक्तिले त्यो निहुँमा अवरोध खडा गर्न सक्छन्। त्यसको प्रतिवाद गर्दै महामन्त्री निधि भन्छन्, “त्यो भ्रमबाट माओवादी मुक्त भइसके। उनीहरूले पनि विगतमा राजा वीरेन्द्रलाई प्रयोग गर्न खोजेकै हुन्।”
कोइरालाको दल नेकाबाट भने उपसभापति सुशील कोइराला र महामन्त्री रामचन्द्र पौडेल दाबेदार हुनसक्छन्। नेका अन्तरिम संसदको ठूलो दल पनि हो। तर, उनीहरू दुवैले महासचिव नेपाल र नेका प्रजातान्त्रिकका सभापति देउवाको जति राजनीतिक उचाइ बनाइसकेका छैनन्। उनीहरूको दाबी वजनदार हुने प्रमुख कारण भनेको प्रम कोइरालाको व्यक्तिगत र दलीय विरासत हो। उमेर, राजनीतिक अनुभव, दलीय विश्वास, वरिष्ठता, विश्वसनीयता, सक्रियता र प्रजातन्त्रप्रतिको प्रतिबद्धता लगायतका हिसाबले कोइरालाको विकल्प भेट्न नसकिने बताउने प्रमका सल्लाहकार चालिसे “अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय विश्वसनीयता र प्रजातन्त्रप्रतिको प्रतिबद्धताले गर्दा कोइरालाको विकल्प नेकाकै नेता हुने” बताउँछन्। दुई काङ्ग्रेस एक भएमा चाहिँ देउवा, कोइराला वा पौडेलबीचको सम्मति बलियो बन्न सक्छ। किनकि नेकपा एमाले र माओवादीबीच एकता नहुँदाको अवस्थामा त्यो दल नै ठूलो दल हुनेछ।
यति हुँदा पनि अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय समुदायको चासोले निर्णायक भूमिका निर्वाह गरेन भने संसदभित्रका दुई प्रमुख दल नेकपा एमाले र नेकपा माओवादीको आपसी सम्बन्ध नै उत्तराधिकारी चयनमा निर्णायक बन्न सक्छ। तर यस्तो अवस्थामा कतै विगतमा झ्ैँ प्रधानमन्त्री बन्न दलहरूबीच अस्वस्थ प्रतिस्पर्धा हुने त होइन भन्ने चासो पनि पाइन्छ। एमाले महासचिव नेपाल भन्छन्, “नेतृत्वको लागि आठदलबीच बहस र छलफल होला, तर साझ्ा सहमति हुनैपर्छ र हुन्छ पनि।”

पोखरामा आयोजितर् इन्डो-नेपाल मैत्रिपूर्ण सिरिज क्रिकेट प्रतियोगिता २००७ अर्न्तगत आज सम्पन्न खेलमा एसप्लानेड लिभरल क्रिकेट क्लव मुर्म्बई विजयी भएको छ । कास्की ११ माथि मुर्म्बई टोलि ४ विकेटले विजयी भएको हो ।
टस जितेर पहिलो ब्याटिङमा उत्रिएको कास्की ११ निर्धारीत ३५ ओभरको खेलमा ९ खेलाडी गुमाई १ सय २५ रन बनाउन सफल भयो । खेलमा दीपेस खत्रीले ३५ रन, शीव सुवेदीले ३१ रन, गोविन्द प्रधान र निर्मल के.शी ले १०/१० रन बनाउनु भयो । वलिङ तर्फसन्जित श्रीवास्तवले ३ तथा सन्दिप ताउडेले २ विकेट लिनु भएको थियो ।

Pokhara (पोखरा) is a city in central Nepal located at 28.24 N, 83.99 E,, 198 km west of kathmandu. It is the capital of Kaski District, Gandaki Zone and the Western Development Region. Pokhara is situated in the northwestern corner of the Pokhara Valley, which is a widening of the Seti Gandaki valley.The Seti River and its tributaries have dug impressive canyons into the valley floor, which are only visible from higher viewpoints or from the air. To the east of Pokhara is the municipality of Lekhnath, another town in the valley. In no other place the mountains rise so quickly, within 30 km, from 1000 m to over 8000 m. The Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu ranges, each with peaks over 8000 m, can be seen from Pokhara and there is a lake named Phewa Lake, two caves (Mahendra and Gupteswar) and an impressive falls(Patale Chhango or Devi /David's Falls) where the water from the Phewa Lake thunders into a hole and disappears. Due to this sharp rise in altitude the area of Pokhara has one of the highest precipitation rates of the country (over 4000 mm/year Pokhara is one of the tourist hub of Nepal. It is a combinatin of nature and culture. Lakeside, is one of the happening places of Pokhara, where tourists can find everything.
Pokhara is quite a modern city with only few touristic attractions in the town itself. Most interesting is the old centre in the north of the city (purano bazar) where still many old shops and warehouses in the Newari style can be found. Mule caravans still arrive there from Mustang.
On a hill overlooking Phewa Tal from the south is the World Peace Stupa (at 1,113 m) built in 1996 with a nice view of the lake, across the city and of the snow peaked mountain range consisting of namely, Fishtail, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himals (mountains).
Places to Visit
Pokhara is known as a major tourist attraction in whole Nepal. Some important places of visit are:

Education System in Nepal
Modern education began in Nepal with the establishment of the first school in 1853. However, this school was only for the members of the ruling families and their courtiers. Schooling for the general people began only after 1951 when a popular movement ended the autocratic Rana family regime and initiated a democratic system. In the past 50 years there has been a dramatic expansion of educational facilities in the country. As a result, adult literacy (15+) of the country was reported to be 48.2% (female: 34.6%, male: 62.2%) in the Population Census, 2001, up from about 5% in 1952/54. Beginning from about 300 schools and two colleges with about ten thousand students in 1951, there now are 26 thousand schools (including higher secondary), 415 colleges, five universities and two academies of higher studies. Altogether 5.5 million students are enrolled in those schools and colleges who are served by more than 150 thousand teachers.
Despite such examples of success, there are problems and challenges. Educational management, quality, relevance, access are some of the critical issues of education in Nepal. Societal disparities based on gender, ethnicity, location, economic class, etc. are yet to be eliminated. Resource crunch has always been a problem in education. Due to all 3 these problems achieving the universal goals of Education for All has been a challenge for the country. With national as well as international support, the government is committed to address the issues realistically and efficiently and achieve its goals and objectives.
Structure of Education
Education in Nepal is structured as school education and higher education. School education includes primary level of grades 1-5, lower secondary and secondary levels of grades 6-8 and 9-10 respectively. Pre-primary level of education is also available in certain areas. Six years of age is the prescribed age for admission into grade one. A national level School Leaving Certificate (SLC) Examination is conducted at the end of grade ten. Grades 11 and 12 are considered as higher secondary level. Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) supervises higher secondary schools which are mostly under private management. Previously these grades were under the university system and were run as proficiency certificate level.
Some universities still offer these programs. However, the policy now is to integrate these grades into the school system.
Higher education consists of bachelor, masters and PhD levels. Depending upon the stream and subject, bachelors level may be of three to five years' duration. The duration of masters level is generally of two years. Some universities also offer programs like M Phil and post-graduate diploma.
Legally, there are two types of school in the country: community and institutional. Community schools receive regular government grant whereas institutional schools are funded by school's own or other non-governmental sources. Institutional schools are organized either as a non-profit trust or as a company. However, in practical terms, schools are mainly of two types: public (community) and private (institutional). A third type of school is the schools run by the local people enthusiastic towards having a school in their localities. They do not receive regular government grants and most of them do not have any other sustainable financial source. Supported and managed by the local people, they can be thus identified as the real community schools.
Except one, all universities/academies are publicly managed and are supported by public source fund. However, public universities also provide affiliation to private colleges. Two academies of higher education are single college institutes whereas other universities have constituent and affiliated colleges across the country. Never!
Education Administration
The Ministry of Education and Sports is the apex body responsible for initiating and managing educational activities in the country. The Minister of Education, assisted by the State/Assistant Minister, provides political leadership to the Ministry. The Ministry, as a part of the government bureaucracy, is headed by the Secretary of Education and consists of the central office, various functional offices and offices located at the regional and district levels. The Central Office or the Ministry is mainly responsible for policy development, planning and monitoring and evaluation regarding different aspects of education.
With a purpose of bringing education administration nearer to the people, the Ministry has established five Regional Directorates and 75 District Education Offices in five development regions and 75 districts respectively. These decentralized offices are responsible for overseeing nonformal and school level educational activities in their respective areas. Regional Directorates are mainly responsible for coordinating and monitoring and evaluation of education activities and the District Education Offices are the main implementing agencies.

Maoists to join Nepal cabinet
KATHMANDU: Nepal's former Maoist rebels will join an interim government in February, the Himalayan nation's prime minister said, capping a fast-moving peace process that is ending a decade-old civil war.
Earlier this week, the Maoists joined an interim parliament, began handing over weapons and dissolved their parallel government and "people's courts" under a November peace pact aimed at ending an insurgency in which over 13,000 people died. "The interim government including the Maoists will be set up in 15-20 days at the latest," Girija Prasad Koirala said. The interim administration aims to organise elections for a special assembly to prepare a new constitution and decide the future of the monarchy, which the Maoists want abolished.
The polls are expected to take place in June. Koirala said the interim administration would be named after the UN-monitored arms handover. Key donor United States, which has kept the Maoists on its list of terrorist groups, said the arms handover must be completed in an "effective and transparent" manner before the former rebels entered the government.

मेरो नयाँ संसार वीरअनो छ यहाँ पुरनो याद हरु धेरै चन अनि नयाँ कल्पना पनि ।मलाई कैले लही खुशी पनि लाग्छ अनि आसा पनि यो नयाँ संसार मेरै सपना सकर बनाउन को गनी नै होला जस्तो लगेर तर धेरै त धुख नै लगेको छ मेरो प्यारो देश जहाँ म हुर्के बदे अनि मलाई जस्ले पहिचन दियो त्ए देश लाई म छोडेर आज यो वीरअनो मुलुक को जाडो खान आइयको छु ।कता कता साथी हरु संघ हाँसो थत्त गरेर मुहर म खुशी ल्याउन खोज्छु तर मलाई थाहा छ त्यो चन्दिक मात्रै हो भनेर ।हो सचै कुरा यहाँ दुःè छ अमेरिका को यो वीरअनो ठाउँ म ।म पोखरा को रमदिए ठाउँ म जन्मे हुर्के को मान्छे मलाई प्रकृति प्यारो लाग्छ अनि मलाई खुला आकाश प्यारो लाग्छ तर यो आकाश म धेरै आवज हरु छ चिएचै रहेक चन करै रहेक चन अनि भनि रहेक छन कि बाँच्न यहाँ धेरै गाह्रो छ त्एस्मा पनि हामी नेपाली कम को खोजिमा अनि पढ्ने न्यू ले यहाँ आइयका ।वास्तवमै धेरै गाह्रो छ ।धुख क कहाँनी धेरै छ सुनिदिने कोइ छैन ।सुन्ने फुर्सद नै कस्लाई छ यहाँ ? यस्तै छ यहाँको कहाँनी ।
